i have a female white german shepherd dog and she sheds a new carpet for me every day.. how the heck do i control this problem?? and yes it is a problem...i have hard tile flooring and two small children who like to roll around and play all day, when they get up their clothes look absolutely horrible....i have had my dog for about 2 1/2 months and it has been like this the whole time.....what should i do??? i just purchased a shedding blade today and i will see if this does the job but i am very doubtful.... i have been brushing her with a normal grooming brush and that does nothing....pllllllleeeeeeeeaaaase hhhheeeeeeelpp!!!!!!!!
1. Adjust your housekeeping standards. You will always find little drifts of hair you missed on the last vacuuming.
2. Wear fabrics that match the dog.
3. The rake works well -- it gets a lot of the loose undercoat. I also use a flea comb and a ZoomGroom from the people that make the Kong dog toys. Kong Grooming Brushes It gets stuff that the other two combs miss. It's especially good at getting the loose hairs on the outer coat. I like it and Chance likes it.
4. I've heard that additional Omega-3 oils in the diet help control shedding. No experience pro or con on that one.
5. Groom her on a regular basis. It helps.
6. Ed has a nice tape on grooming Shepherds. See the training videos section on the Leerburg web site.
I keep looking at the piles of the soft, cream-colored undercoat I collect and wonder if someone could make it into yarn.
Go ahead and laugh, but I knew someone in California that made a sweater out the hair that came off her Samoyed. She used to wear it all the time in the Winter.

I think we all walk around day in and day out wearing our dogs fur, even if we don't actually make sweaters out of them! It's in the house, in the car, heck, we even take it to work with us! Just face it, as long as you have the dog, you're going to have the hair... The grooming rakes do work well, though, especially on the undercoat which sheds the most. That's all I use on my dogs. I may be doing it wrong, but I find the shedding blades to be worthless. I've started supplementing my dogs with salmon oil and a bit of raw egg and it seems to be controlling it some. Or you just buy one of those industrial vacs that you can strap to your back and carry it around the house all day.
I have horses and ocasionally in the catalogues they advertise vacume brushes, these are basicly a small carry vac with a grooming attachment on the end, ive met a couple of people who have them and they swear by them for both their horses and dogs.
NB: Cats aparently get a bit dangerous when you attempt to do them!!(MEOWWWWROWWW)
