This is really sad, but I just wanted to share this and ask that you take a minute to say a special prayer or thank you for those who unselfishly put their lives on the line every day to serve and protect.
A special memorial service will be held on Friday, January 31st to honor “Urk,” a Sheriff’s Canine killed in the line of duty on January 18th. “Urk” was considered to be one of the canine unit’s finest canines. “Urk” and his handler were nominated as “Deputy of the Year” for 1999.
“Urk” a five year old German Shepherd was fatally shot on Saturday, January 18th when a suspect opened fire with a shotgun on a Deputy Sheriff (“Urk’s handler), and Explorer Deputy ride-along. The Explorer was also injured in the exchange of gunfire.
The canine deputy and a second deputy exchanged several shots with the suspect as he fled on foot across the freeway. The initial “officer needs assistance (11-99)” call led to a multi-agency response from law enforcement agencies.
There has been an outpouring of concern from the community for the fatally wounded canine, and the Sheriff’s Department is making plans to suitably honor “Urk.”

One more thing:
Sorry, I forgot to mention, the K9 handler and the other Deputy are doing as well as can be expected. The Deputy Explorer had surgery and is at home recovering and is in good spirits. The bad guy was caught and is in custody.

Hey:
Thanks guys, of course not, people who do stuff like that never die. It is just like a DUI/DWI crash, if the drunk driver gets hurt at all its like 2-3 stitches and the other car with the soccer mom that's filled with kids that suffer.
I'm rather lost for words after reading your post about "URK" except to say I am truly sorry.
I am thankful that the officers are on their way to recovery. And please let them know that there are people out here that appreciate them for putting their lives on the line every day.
I also hope the criminal does not see the light of day for a long, long, time.
27 January 2003, Deputy in Utah near the Arizona border was shot and killed while waiting for a tow truck after making a DUI arrest. Passenger found a weapon in the suspect vehicle and shot the Deputy what I believe to be four times. Same deal, Multi - agency reponse (Troopers from AZ HP, Coconino (AZ)SO, U.S. Forest Service among others)POS liberated his friend after the shooting. Both found late on same road by Utah Deputies, two in custody. This comes within a week of one of our guys getting shot ( two rounds, one to the vest and one to the wrist watch that saved his arm) @ US 60 / I-10 junction. There is an assistant CA here in Navajo County who actually said that fighting and being shot at is to be expected and is part of the job. Be safe. G.

Brandon, Pass on to the handler of URK that we are thinking of them both. It's always hard to lose both a partner and companion.
Keep us posted as to the fate of the gunman.
