hello! let's try this again now I believe I was sayingthat my dog has been scratching and banging himself at the door late last night or should I say almost all night I got up to let him out thinking he had to relieve himself but it also look like he wanted to get out the yard also scratching and jumping at the wooden gate is there certain x of the year when dogs are in heat maybe he smells a female in heat near by or ?
No, Dogs come in all months of the year. What you are dealing with is most likely what I said. There may be a dog in heat in the neighborhood, but unless it is with in a house or two he probably doesn't know about it.

If I'm not mistaken this is the 7.5 year old large GSD, that you have just made a part of your family. If this is true, he may be trying to go back to his former owner. There stories of dogs travel hundreds on miles to find their human pack memebers.
I would crate him and feed him, I'd crate him at night and whenever you have time play with him and feed him. Let him do his business, then crate him, until your bonding process is successful. You will know it, when he just seems delighted to see you, because his tail and whole body is dancing the jig. Then you can leave the crate door open, when you crate him.
