I have been working with my 18 week old GSD on FST. I have ed's video and have been doing the 100ft straight tracks baited with food.
I have been very impressed with his focus on the track. at first he tried to run it very fast but he has slowed down.
I wanted to try something today to see if he is actually following scent or just going in a straight line. So what i did was lay a normal straight track but about 30 feet into it, I veered off the straight line diagonal about 15-20 degrees to see if he veered off with the track or kept going......... well he just kept going, and he looked as if he was actually following my track but i made sure that i did not step foot onto the field except for the intitial track layed.
What should i do?
And how long should i wait before putting the dog on the track after laying it. I wait about 5 mins.
At the begining stage Id waite atleast 15 minutes. Youll get more biological disturbance at 15 min. than you will at 5 min because the crushed veg will have more time to start breaking down. As for the pup going straight instead of veering off and staying on the track,,, you shouldnt have allowed it. You should allow the pup to keep tension on the line so it is pulling you, the dog feels confidence in a tight line. When the pup went off the track you should have stopped walking, stood still, until the pup was on the track again and then let it pull you forward into the track again. At this stage of tracking you shouldnt be very far at all behind your dog so you can give your dog guidance quickly if you need to if something goes wrong. Smething else you can do later on down the road when your dog is tracking better is to from time to time not walk exactly behind your dog, swing out to the side some and then go back behind your dog. Thats just to help proof your dog from simply keeping its head down and staying infront of you.
Stop making excuses for your dog and start training it!
I have a pup a couple weeks older that I am working the same way only he has no intention of slowing down. He also lifts his head up periodically if the treats are not a foot or so apart. Ed says in his video to space the drops every few steps. Am I creating bad habits with my close food drops or is this an acceptable practice for a dog who you are trying to slow down and who lifts his head. Thanks
I have been watching my dog as he does his thing. to me it seems like he just keeps his nose down, and walks in a straight line and stops only when he smells the bait. I know this is what he is supposed to do but at the end of the trail he keeps going. I know there is no scent there, and he just keep going straght. I tested him to see if he would realize there is no scent there to see what he does. He kept going for about 40 feet then he just picked up his head and stopped. It seemed like since he didnt find any food he gave up.
I think I am at a point that i can mess up the training, so i need help so i can go back on the right track!
