I have been doing target training for a while with my dog. I use a lazer pointer, point the dog looks, click, treat then on to the dog touching the dot with his nose. He is doing well with that and I want to move on to getting him to press a buzzer (wireless door buzzer). The point of this is to get him to nose the buzzer in my son's room, or the main floor, as an alert/response when my son has a seizure. I have a good idea how to train this, but was wondering if any of you know if I should only train this this when my son has a seizure, or if I should teach the buzzer pressing, and then train the connection with the seizure? I'd be interested in any suggestions.

Hi Phyllis
I break those two things down and then couple them. Once the dog knows the "button press" and is consistantly responding to it, then add the secondary cue , of seizure activity. Try it with a simulation seizure (somone faking it)this eleiviates the high tension that can come from stress on both the dogs part and any one else that may be concerned for your son. Cue him to hit hte button when the seizure behavior starts, guiding along if necessary. Once he has done this with your help a few times see how he manages with you not in the room to reinforce it. If successful you can now hope to catch him in the act during a real seizure. Becasue you don't know when one is coming on I suggest setting a video camera up if possible this way you can see how fast the reaction is , if there was a seizure with no reaction, just any clues that can help make this successful.
Good Luck
BTW great to see a familiar face. Glad you sent me this site.
Lisa

Hi Lisa, Thanks for your suggestions. I will do just that. I have to find a buzzer from the hardware store that has the right size button for his nose. I don't think teaching the behaviour will be difficult, it is the pairing with the seizure stimulus that I am really worried about. One thing at a time. I appreciate your input.

Well, I have found a wireless door bell and the training is coming along, however I think if anyone is going to attempt this they should consider a large button press with high sensitivity. I have to figure out a way to enlarge the button area. I'm thinking of a plastic square crazy glued onto the button. It will be easier for the dog and more reliable. He is doing well, but doesn't always hit the target exactly.
By the way, he is really enjoying this exercise. He gets excited and looks forward to it.

How about this? Mount the buzzer to the wall. About a foot above the buzzer you place a hinge that has attached to a piece of wood that hangs down so it covers the buzzer. That way, a press just about anywhere on the wood, even remotely near the buzzer, will press the button on the buzzer.
I'd be afraid that the crazy glued extension that you mention might break off at just the wrong moment.
If this isn't clear, let me know and I'll send a sketch of what I mean privately.

Lou, great idea!
Now that's what I call creativity.
I'll let you know how it goes.

Hi, Well I have put the hinge up and it is working like a dream. This particular situation is proof that the dog won't generalise without training in all situations though. I am actually having to start again from scratch.
He looks at the new wood piece and isn't sure what to do with it. Back to square one, but I know with some consistency he will be back doing an even better job than before.

Phyllis, can you draw a nice bright colored circle on the board? Something that resembles the original target?

Hi Sharon, thanks for the idea. Actually the original target was the doorbell, and it is small and plain white. I have been back to using the laser pointer on it, and he seems to be getting it better than before.
It will take a few days until I can fade the laser pointer again. The idea of the wood was to increase the target area for his nose, and it is working like a dream. His training is coming along very well. He is starting to retrieve the phone and my son's shoes as well.
