I'm thinking of buying a 6 months old GSD bitch for SchH . I have been trying to determine her level of prey drive using Bernhard "Building Drive, Focus and Grip"
What can I expect to see in a 6 month old pup that has not been exposed to this type of training? She seems to want to chase the tug but is not gripping it well . She play- fights for a tug but definitely at the moment is not mad about it. Her lines are good and based on genetics she seems to be a good prospect, her sire is in our SchH club.
I have a SchH A dog whom I introduced to Bernhard methods when he was nearly 3 years old, so I do not have experience with pups.
I have about 2 more weeks to try to develop her before I decide if I want to keep her. How much can I learn about pup's drives using Bernhard methods?
Its hard to say with out seeing it. You say you got 2 weeks to decide if your gonna buy it. Have you tried anything other than the tug. You might see if you can get her fired up with a differnt tug or with something else that she might like to bite and hold on to better. You ask what should you expect to see. Well here it is, to me its really 2 questions 1) what should I expect to see in a 6 month old pup, and/or 2) what should I expect to see in a 6 month old pup Im going to buy!! In a 6 month old pup Im going to buy to do Sch. with , I expect to see it looking like greased lightening trying to grab the prey object. With that said ,can you build the drive and grip,?,,,maybe,,, people do it all the time. But its always better to start(spend money) with the right pup that you feel confident about.
Stop making excuses for your dog and start training it!
