I was wondering if anyone had insight regarding the following. I adopted a 3-4 yr old belgian shep. mix, maybe crossed with some bordercollie. She will chase squirrels, birds in the yard a top speed, she seems attracted to anything that moves, yet when I initiate play with an item to chase, a ball or a stick she has very little interest. On occassion I can get her to run towards the item but she jumps over it. She spent approx 3 months in the shelter, its questionable if her previous owners where abusive and or rough with her. I can initiate play in the yard and she loves to run!!! I'm new to the web board and am really interested in some input.
How long have you had her? It might just be that she's never had anyone try to play ball with her. Sound like she has drive, just doesn't have it figured out as a game yet. Try a rag on a 6ft rope. The quick action of flipping that around may kick start her drive for play. Don't let her get it initially. You want her to REALLY want to grab it.
I've had her since August. She is really coming along. Initially was very reactive and hypervigilant. She also didn't seem to know how to chew a toy. I will give your suggestion a try. I'd love to engage her in a game of fetch or the like to help her burn off steam! I've even seen her take notice of geese flying in the sky while she was in my car. Sure seems like the drive is in there!!
I tried the rag on a string a few times, my dog seems to shut down. She does like bullystix, I can get her to chase and grab the stick if I throw it in the house. Is that unfair or teasing her if I use the stick to get her going then put it away for later??
