Hello Everbody,
I am from India, interested in Working lines GSD , preferably Czech or DDR lines. I am planning to live on the outskirts of a city in South-Central India , Hyderabad.
There are a lot of Dacoities in the nights , approximately between the hours of 2 AM to 3 AM.
These people have no scruples or conscience in robbing people. they usually come in groups of four to five and rob the residents and go to the extent of injuring and sometimes even kill.
They usually just rob , if may be no resistance is offered.
I need a dog that would aid me in defending myself . I had considered several breeds, but I was very apprehensive of the breeders and their stock .
I feel a good German Shepherd with sound nerves may suit my purpose.
Personally , I am an Dog enthusiast and had dogs before like Boxers , german spitz labrador and german shepherd.
If any of you can advise or educate me about lines or ethical breeders , I would be greatly benefit.
Regards,
Lalit
Go to http://www.red-star-kennel.com and take a look. You will not be sorry. These dogs are serious working dogs. Read about Red Kennel and what their idea of a functional Working Presa is and you will see what I am talking about. I am going to visit their kennel next month prior to purchasing a puppy.
Well, a serious working breed in the eye of the beholder, I guess. I've read throught the red-star kennel site, and I see a lot of hype, but not much to back up those claims.
Some of their dogs getting titles in the *common* proving grounds for serious working dogs, ie, Police Patrol Work, high level SchH, AKC obedience, etc., would be a start to establishing a reputation for the dogs actually being working dogs. Mainly I see CGC's and a few entry lvl PSA titles, and darn few of thoses.
Sorry, this is an unproven breed, period.
And wander around their forum for a bit. For a "serious working dog", I don't see much discussion about work. 50% of the posts there are puppy and dogs pictures. Great, I'm glad these folks love their dogs, but they're fooling themselves when they go around and tell everyone that this is a serious working breed.
When I see more ( what am I saying...just a few would be more than what we're seeing ) of these dogs worked and titled in the acceptable dog training venues, then I'll take a look at them. until then, most people would be much better served with a working lines GSD or Mal.
I am not affiliated with red star kennel. I am just someone who is interested in buying a personal protection dog and if
genetics is everything, then I know that buying a presa canario from red star is my best choice. I am sure that a GSD or Mal can do a good job as well but I prefer the presa and if you look at the video clips you can see that they have all the drive necessary to be great PP dogs, at least the one in red star kennel. I never meant to knock the GSD I am sure that they are great as well.
After reading the posts a second time, I realized that it looks like I came across wrong. My Wrong - Mr. Dukkipati did specify that he is looking for a GSD, I just saw his post and decided to talk about the presa canario and maybe make a friend since no else replied.
I've looked into presas for use as private security dogs (may as well take advantage of the hype to sell yourself...), and I've noticed a few things.
IF you buy from a good working breeder (Red Star being one of them), most of the dogs seem to have "some" drive to work. If you're looking for a deterrent, probably not a bad choice.
However, the few that I've had the chance to see demo'd had VERY chewy grips, and serious hip problems seemed to be pretty common. Carrying that much weight, I'd hate to have a dog be even mildly displastic.

Jose,
Looks like your mind is made up. It's your money.....
Just as a note, I've already recieved a PM from another board member of this forum ( with a strong training background ) who has viewed red-star kennel dogs and it's training methods during a seminar that their kennel held, and I'll just be polite here and say that the trainer was less than impressed.
