Hi, I am José Zullo from Brazil and I got a few questions for you and I hope
you can help me. I got two german shepherds, one male(6 1/2 months old) and
a female(4 1/2 months old). The male came home when he was 2 months old and
lived alone for 3 months when i got the female. My first question concerns
the relationship between the two of them: I have been feeding the female dog
first(simply because she eats in a different place than him and her place is before his), but he watches
me do this and as soon as he finishes eating he goes after her. Does this
affect the alpha state of the male dog ? By this i mean, does he become a
beta dog and she the alfa dog? Also, everytime me or my mom go outside to
see them he gets jealous and starts biting her. It's not hard but he bites
her and she bites back. Is there any way to avoid this behaviour?
Hello Jose,
My thoughts are that the male being the first pup in the house is now confused. All of a sudden a newcomer arrives and he is not getting his food first.
Will this cause you a problem? Not at the present time but later you will have to deal with the pups deciding who will be Beta in the group.
Jose, you need to be the Alpha in your pack. The two GSD's will have to be a lower rank. I have to feed my GSD male seperate from my female Akita. Both share everything but their food dish. GSD is the Alpha. The Akita will try to dominate any and all others dogs she comes into contact with. Yes both are doingf the same as your pups do, but never cause any damage to the other. (GSD7yrs old and Akita almost 6) they have been raised together since pups.
I would try feeding your female out of sight from the female and the same for the male.
Give both pups quality time together and seperatly, you shouldn't hacve any probloems.
