hi! first time user with a desperate question. My wife and I (no children..or future children) have two dogs, a ten year old male fixed Rottie (rescued at 1 year old) and a four year old fixed female shepard chow mix (rescued at 6 months) they met three years ago (coincidently the same time my wife and I met) and are now absolutely inseperable!! Both are in excellent shape and great helath we have a large house and yard for plenty of excercise and trips to the local dog park happen on the weekends. The problem: We have afreind who needs to get rid of his five year old male fixed Rottie who is not blending well with the new baby. We would love to save this great dog but worry about having three dogs and possibly upsetting our older male. Our guy...Mavereck is clearly the alpha and the possible new guy...Dodge was clearly submissive with his other family (they recently had to put thier other Rottie down due to failing health)....Can we make this situation work? Are we insane? Any hints suggestions or comments would be greatly appreciated!!! We love Rott's and want to do what's best for all.
Thanks.
It may or may not work, but you won't know unless you try it. I have three GSDs in the house, a male and two females and they all get along great. My male was a recent addition. (last April) I guess it really depends on their personalities. I bring home a lot of foster dogs too and my male isn't happy half of the time and takes time to accept it but I have not had any bad experiences so far. *Knocking on wood.*
Introduce them carefully, use crates or keep them in separate rooms when you aren't home and make sure they know who is the pack leader! I have 3 bitches and a male in the house. Occassionally a grumble or two, but I am the leader and I do not tolerate even a hint of aggression. My older American/German spayed bitch and young male will go into posturing for alpha and I do not let it get past a couple of head raisings. I also do not leave 4 dogs loose in the house if I am not home.
