I have a spayed two and a half year old female Lab/Shar-pei and three weeks ago we acquired a now 16 week old female Dutch Shepherd puppy.
We introduced them very slowly and on neutral ground the first several times and have been keeping them completely separate.
Just this week we have been letting them play together for very breif periods under close supervision. I don't want this puppy to get too doggy and I'd like some input on what would be considered TOO MUCH time for them to be together???
My intention is to raise this Dutch girl for personal and family protection.
Any input is greatly appreciated!
Hi Jim, It sounds like they are playing well together. As long as that is the case and these brief periods remain under your close supervision, it is good social and enrichment experience. Especialy considering the Dutch Shepherd is to be a family protection dog, not a sport or working dog. You may recognize the "too much" point as when the Dutch Shepherd (or both)fails to pay attention to you, ignoring a command, or excluding you from the play. The close supervision you mention must prevent the Dutch Shepherd from ever being dominated by the Lab/Shar-pei. Which would be bad for a family protection dog. Again, these are brief periods under close supervision, correct? The "too doggy" part is when they become pack mates and you are not President of the club. Use the time to proof your training too. If your dog won't stop and obey, play time ends. At 16 weeks, keep it real short, and add time as she grows.
Whoever will only draw conclusions from the eminence of his own particular point of view, will obtain a distorted picture.-v. Stephanitz
Thanks for the response! Just got back from a WAY TOO LONG Thanksgiving weekend.lol
If anything the Duthie is the dominate one in my group. Our Lab is VERY submissive.
The sessions are very short and in a very supervised enviroment so it sounds like I'm doing thing okay?
Thanks Again
