Well, I wanted to be the first to post under Mal or Working GSD but (of course!!!) VanCamp beat me to it.
For years I bred and trained German line working Dobes. I lost my last breeding female several years ago and have fallen out of the Dobe loop. I know there are some nice working Dobes out there. Lets hear from you guys!
hi cindy, i own a doerman here in oz from the weyermuehle blood line. His sire is Baron v blitzkrieger sch iii from http://www.vonforell.com he is a nice dog... Has only joined my team shortly but is a good prospect. Is anyone familiar with this line? Any other lines for service work?
I was hoping somebody would pick this thread back up again. Thanks for the link. It looks like these are damn good dogs. The peds are riddled with titles. ( Germans )
Before the pit bull craze of the late seventies or so, the dobes where the big kids on the block in the USA suburbs. I remember some pretty scarey ones in my neighborhood in my youth. What do the Germans say about their eyes again? Something about it being like looking into the eyes of the devil or something?
I always liked the sharp temperment of the Dobes and it's good to see someone with a clue is still working with this breed.
Dobes are great dogs if you find the right bloodlines. I was lucky enough to get a pup from Germany in the late 80's. A female named Elka vom Shonenberg. I titled her to SchH3 IPO3, many times high in trial(against GSD's ) and 2 times 100 points in protection. She was a great friend and teacher as well as being a wonderful sport dog and home protector. She was my foundation bitch, she was a Feus Nympenburg daughter, her mother was a Bingo Ellendonk daughter. She was my once in a lifetime dog and I will never forget her.
I no longer have Dobes, I have a GSD and just got a Malinois pup. This Mal has many of the same characteristics I saw in Elka as a pup. I have my fingers crossed, I think she is a good one. I will always love Dobermans and always stick up for them when they are the object of discussion.
I know how you feel about Elka. You always have that one dog in your life that you will never forget and no other can ever live up to. Mine was Rabiat. Ed's old police dog before he died on a plane. If you knew him you would know why.
A few months back I did a search on Dobe's and if I remember right there is a kennel in Calif., I think around L.A., breeding and working Dobes. I think in the pages of search I got back there were only 2-3 kennels listed that were working their dogs.
I have got to learn to spell and type!!!

There was a girl that handled a dobie that she got from a rescue outfit. She was the girl friend of the TD. The dog was called hyper, aggressive, uncontrolable, blah, blah, blah... Pretty good dog. Very pretty dog. All that visible sinue and muscle. . . Gets me excited remembering.
This doesn't help anybody, but I just wanted to post in here. I have no idea what kind of bloodlines this dog came from.
My husband and I love Dobes with a passion, but GSD's were our first love so that's where we started. If we are ever able to acquire the resources, they will be our next breed to venture into later down the road. (Except for the Dachshund...don't ask...that's whole other story in itself!) I remember the one and only local Schutzhund trial we went to a couple of years ago, it was predominantly Dobes and Rotts with maybe 2 or 3 GSD's. And the only dog working for a SchH III was a Dobe. Maybe it's just a regional thing.
Not at present, but they can be tough little dogs. I have seen a pair of them run off GSD's and Rott's. The big problem is they fight on their backs rather than their feet. They will rake with the feet and bite at the same time. The pair that used to run off the big dogs would work like this. They would split up as they went out, when the other dog turned on one it would flip on it's back. The other would harrass from the rear. When the dog turned the roles would be reversed. As a breed they were developed to go in to badger holes and kill the badgers. Tough task.
