I'm not claiming to be an expert, but I have gone through this a couple of times so this is what I have learned. The time it takes the ears to stand has to do with the length of the crop. There are three types of crop lengths, long (show crop), Medium and Short, the latter two used mostly for working dogs. The shorter the crop the sooner the ears will stand. That is why it can take anywhere from 1 month to 3 months, however I haven't personnally seen it take more than six weeks to get the ears to stand. With my dobes, I let the ears "air" out overnight between tapings. During this time I work on getting the dog to make the ears stand by getting him interested and curious about things as this natually gets him to stand his ears. It also works the muscles so the ears will stand faster. I hope this helps.
it appears to be a show crop.
i have the taping done at the vet that did the crop, 80 mile round trip drive. i go every other week.
i like the exercise routine you descibed.
thanks
i began to tape the ears myself using the cork and stay method that the vet place was using.
how will i know when they are all set.
are they supposed to stand straight up all the time or only when alert and the other times sort of on an angle but not floppy.
as of now one will stand the next day erect when alert but the other appears to be weak and will flop.
thanks.
The ears will only stand straight up when the dog is on alert or interested in something. Otherwise, they normally go at an angle like you are discribing. It appears that you are getting very close to being able to stop with the taping. When both ears are acting the same, I'd say your done! <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
ok, thanks,
i wasnt sure, but after seeing some different pics i started to wonder.
one ear is on its way but the other is lagging. hopefully just another month.
I just got some more information on taping at my SchH club yesterday and I wanted to pass in on to you. I have a new 3 month old pup with cropped ears. The vet took off his wraps Friday saying the ears were done and I didn't have to wrap anymore, well I was skeptical , but figured, o.k. he's the vet. Well when I showed up at the club, senior members with dobes told me...get those ears wrapped back up! Then they procceeded to show me all the areas when the ears were not doing well. The tops were tipping in and there was a wrinkle in one ear. They said that you must continue to wrap until the puppies adult teeth at in! I guess during that time the ears can weaken and start to fall. Also, hot weather can cause them to fall. So it looks like if your pup is as young as mine when it got taped (2 months) then we're looking at about 4-6 months of taping. I just wanted to pass on what I had learned. ANd yes...I'm learning how to do my own tapping as right now!
Lela, thanks for the info.
i also heard that when they are teething it can slow the process. right now when the tape is off his ears are standing straight and tall. i have been doing it myself past few weeks but took him one more time to the vet for a tape this past weekend.
its very easy using the tampon methed and he stays pretty still while i do it. i'm hoping by the time he is 6- 6 1/2 months that he will be all set. each time i take the tape off i hope they stand longer each time. i have pics i can send you if you give me your email.
ok, think i may be allset ears have been up since last saturday without hanging. these things are straight up when alert which is most of the time. what do you think?
