I agree with Pete, going after anyone he sees seems like a temperament problem. Now, moving on to the weight and size. I have two dobes male and female. My female is 6 years old and weighs 77lb and is 26 1/2 inches at the shoulders. She grew "up" until she was about 1 and grew "out" until she was about 2. My male is almost 2 1/2 years old and weighs 89lb and is 27 1/2 inches at the shoulders. He is still gaining muscle to this day.
You have to understand that every dog grows and develops differently. There is a breed standard that states what size a specific breed should be, and they should fit somewhere within the standard. Now you say you have a "king" dobe. Can you explain that? What lines is your dog from?
Um... am I misunderstanding you, or are you saying that "wanting to go after anyone he sees" is evidence of a great temperament?!?!
Please tell me I'm wrong?
Pete Felknor
I too am a little confused as to your post. What are you going to do when he gets older. :rolleyes:
Crabtree: dobe king, if this young pup continue's these actions you may have a problem. I may be wrong in my interpertation of your post. Please clarify if you don't mind.
Crabtree: Pete dobe king may have different understanding on the different types of temperment that K-9's can have.
I would say that if the situation really is as King Dobie describes (i.e. the dog is going off at anyone and everyone), a couple of things would occur to me immediately:
1) Correct the snot out of the dog for lighting up on people inappropriately;
2) Start paying serious attention to what are probably some severe flaws in the dog's temperament.
Pete, If we are both not understanding king dobie, I think we are in tune to the problem.
What's this MR. Crabtree stuff, Chuck F. was giving me a hard time about the Huey thing.(Butch works better for me.
Well, he hasn't come back. Maybe we hurt his feelings?
I was really looking forward to explaining how a great protection dog is NEVER a "mean" dog, just for those in the audience who still hadn't figured that out. But now I guess I won't get to get up on my soapbox!
Seriously, I hope we just misunderstood the dude. Maybe he meant that the dog only lights up on people at night? (a slight improvement, anyway).
Welcome aboard. If what you said is literally what you meant, then what was stated above is true. This is not a sign of good temperament, it is a sign of a dangerous dog. Feel free to clarify what you meant if we mis-understood you.
I understood it the same way that you guys did, and cringed when I read it. I can vouch for the fact that a mean dog is not a good personal protection dog...quite the opposite.
If the dog is only behaving this way at night, it's possible he may have difficulty seeing when it starts getting dark. Or his insecurities may simply get the best of him and he gets jumpy when he can't see as well because of the dark, which to me at least, could be an indication of a nerve problem. That's just my humble opinion.
