I have a 2 1/2 yr. old female with a fanatic prey drive. I mean FANATIC! She's worse than my greyhound when it comes to chasing rabbits, lizards, balls, the water hose...you name it. Her grand-sires are Leerburg's Orfey and Otis. (Orfey on the Dam's side) Given her Belgium lineage and the fact that her mother is also very prey-driven and agile, I'm quick to assume this trait is a product of those lines since my other shepherds are from German lines and do not exhibit nearly as strong of a prey drive. Any input on this?
My husband works a 1/2 Belgian dog...we have the same fanatic prey drive in him...
We've worked with TDs who have said it is because the Belgian and Dutch GSDs are actually cross-bred with the Malinois.
Don't know if I believe it or not.
Yikes! I don't want to believe that, but now that you mention it, a lot of her traits do closely resemble a malinois. She's a sharp dog and full of energy. Ed, your thoughts on this? I'm interested to know more about the temperament out of Orfey's lines. I will say though, out of all my dogs, she was the easiest and most willing to train.
