He has been having a problem w/ biting at his nub for many months now. i have tried a hot spot spray, feeding garlic as someone recommended and putting rather untasty elements on his nub.
still wants to lick and nibble.
about to take him to vet, figured id inquire one last time here before to see if anyone had similiar issue.
Is there any irritation involved, or is it just a rather annoying habit?
Could be a medical thing, could be a mental thing. With both, bitter apple or even tabasco doesn't seem to make a bit of difference. I know, I have one OCD foot licker. It comes and goes to varying degrees, but is mostly when she is stressed by something...
Not saying that is what is up with your dog, but it could be...
I had a dog that had to have 6in removed from her tail. Vet suggested it could be nervous habit similar to fingernail biting. After the tail tip was removed she stopped chewing. With a short tailed dog, I'm stumped. Pardon the pun. Vet check, definately. Others on board may have better answers.
Ok, another question.. is the dog concentrating on the tip, or just chewing in general? Where is the raw place located? top, tip, side etc?
It could be any number of things from a food allergy, to worms, to as I mentioned before, a slight neurotic behavior.
I am thinking that a trip to the vet might be a good idea.. you posted a few days back about this same dog being smelly, there is a possibility there is something bigger going on here.
he, for the most part, chews on the tip, but will also at times go to the side. it is always on the same side though.
i think ill bring him in, he hasnt been there since the initial puppy check when i got him at 8 weeks.
thanks
Hasn't been to the Vets since 8 wks? Do you do your own puppy shots? I know a lot of board members are against shots but puppy shots are a different matter IMHO.
Have you ever heard of a "lick granuloma". It is obsessive licking of a wound, Dobes are one of the breeds that can develop this behavior. I have a 3 yr old Dobe mix that is always licking between his toes to the point of making them raw. Check the web for more info.
