Hi, just a general question:
Does anyone have an opinion and/or experience on the differences between a Malinois, GSD and Doberman when it comes to tracking?
I know the number of GSDs are larger in SchH/IPO/FH, but are there any main differences in training these breeds, or any differences in nose capabilities etc?
(Let us all agree that all three breeds may be great working dogs, so the differences ones point out isn't necessary any negative comment on another breed.)
All three have excellent tracking abilities. Differences probably come down more to temperament. It's much more difficult to track a high-strung dog, regardless of breed, but if you're unlucky enough to have a hyper or twitchy dog, you're going to have more work ahead of you than if the dog were calm and had a higher threshold of stimulation. All three breeds have both types of temperaments in large numbers.
If there are only two FH2 Dobes in the US, may the reason (fully or partially) be that there are so few Dobes compared to SchH, Rotts etc. in general?
And when you look at the number of WORKING line breeders, there are even fewer.
I am not saying anything about the other breeds mentioned, but: A similar example: Just because there are so few Bavarian Mountain Hounds doesn't mean that they aren't great trackers.
I am sure all these breeds are great, when we talk about real working dogs from all the breeds, but are there any noticable differences?
Absolutely, I think the only reason there are so few Dobes with FH2 is cuz there are so few people working Dobes in general, not cuz they lack the ability, by any means.
The one thing I notice about Doberman, and some other thinner nerved breeds (mals) is that they have good drive, good focus, but can be mishandled more easily and seem to take pressure on the track harder than the dogs with bomb proof nerves.
A few screw ups, really mess up the dogs. GSD's seem to be more resilient as a breed.
Of course all "in general", but that has been my experience with the few Doberpunks I've been around.
Ok. My Doberman pup was born on wedensday and I sure hope he'll become a great tracker.
He has a nice pedigree, Bronco vd Doberwache being the father (FinCh IPOIII, SchHIII, FH-Landesmeister -98 and German Police dog) and a lot of Weyemuhle dogs in there, for example Ilo and Kleo vd Weyermuhle (IDC-WorldCh-96, SchHIII, IPOIII, ID-Dog etc.) and Bingo v Ellendonk. Getting him in two months. Wish me luck <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
