Hi,
We brought a 7 month old Rotty into our home and slowly introduced him to our 4 year old Bischon, Max.
The problem is the rotty took over everything of Max's . I bought toys for the rotty but he wants all the toys.
Also, he goes after Max with such speed, I think when he wants to play, I am afraid he will crush Max with his paws. He also nips Max's tail......Max is only 17 pounds and the rotty is 70 already. He has had some obedience training and knows the basic commands, however when I call him to COME so as to leave Max alone, he just ignores me!!!!!!! Can anyone help me? mimib5@cox.net <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />
I think you better get him into some MORE OB training.. AND FAST!
A dog that ignores you does not see you as the alpha, and he is going to do what he wants to. As he obviously already is. You have to impress upon him who the boss is, and that is through training. You give the toys, you take them away. Don't leave him free rein of the house to bother your other dog, put a 6 foot leash on him and tire him to your waist so he is NEVER out of your sight. You control HIM, he does not pay the mortgage, or for his food.
No different than a kid, set the ground rules, make him follow them, and get him into OB training at a reputable trainer ASAP before you end up with a problem on your hands..
Umm, Steve, I don't think that a dog that ignores you if it's in a particular drive is having a problem with who is Alpha.
That's just erroneous information, sorry.
Tracking breeds ( hounds) are famous for ignoring their owners while they're on a scent - it's not an issue with who's Alpha, it's just their genetic makeup.
Will, you are right, I miss read (or did NOT read) what she said in that part of her post. I didn't realize the dog was in prey mode, I was thinking it was in social mode.
My bad.. Sorry
