I have a 8 month old male rottweiler that is about 85 to 90 pounds. He has been getting obedenice training and does very well.We have a 2 year old and a 4 year old which he is pretty good with.He has very high prey drive and is a little domnent with my wife.My rott and i have a good bond and he knows who is boss. What can i exspect out him as he matures.
If he's being dominant to your wife, chances are he might try to dominate your kids also as he matures. I have two males myself and Obedience is a good first step. Make sure everyone in the house is able to command him and that he listens to them. (As soon as they are old enough, of course.) I would also be sure to have your wife and kids learn how to keep the dog from acting dominant. A good trainer should give you appropriate handling instructions to prevent future problems. A dog that acts dominant to a family member, especially a large working breed is a problem waiting to happen.
Are you sure it is dominance? 8 months sounds young for any breed to exhibit dominant behavior and Rotts tend to mature slower than most breeds, plus they're naturally stubborn. What is he doing that you consider dominant behavior? You mention that you have a high drive dog. The behavior you see as dominant could just be prey drive showing itself. Ed has an excellent article (recently updated) about dealing with a dominant dog. It describes a lot of things people call dominance that really are not. You would do well to look at it. OB will surely help.
