I came across this link in a discussion group on my LJ, and felt it was well worth sharing. BE WARNED, however. Some of the images in this video are *very* graphic, but the video itself is definitely worth a look!
I watched the video, and unfortunately, it's maker is manipulating statistics to his advantage. Yes, pit bulls account for less overall bites then cocker spaniels and labs, as the example that they used, but that statistic is meaningless - you need to use bite rates per number of dogs in the population to get a valid figure. For instance, if there are 100 pit bulls and they bit 9 people, but 4500 labs that bit 21 people, the biting rate for the labs appears much higher, but of course is it is actually considerably lower given their much greater population numbers.
And I notice that the video's maker conveniently left out the rate of *fatal* dogs bite attacks, in which the pit bull would be waaaay over-represented. That's just dishonest, period.
So overall, that was an unbalanced propaganda piece by a pro pit bull club. I have nothing against pit bulls, and I enjoy training them, but "fluff" pieces that distort facts do not help their case with the public
I didn't mean to sound un-sympathetic to the prejudices that Pit Bulls face, and there are a large number of great ones. As a matter of fact, I had at young Pit Bull at my house around six months ago for in-home training for a 3 week period. It was the first and only dog that my wife ever said "He's such a nice dog, I wouldn't mind if we owned him" - I almost fainted when she said that, she usually is counting the days for when an in-home client's dog goes home. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
But trying to battle ignorance with half-truths and distortions will back-fire on them.
VanCamp,
Her figures were so far off that I didn't bother to reply.
I have access to animal control facts/ figures from selected shelters across the U.S. at my finger tips at all times- a shelter that euth'd 1k dogs per year would be exceptionaly high, even for large cities. The chance of any shelter/ animal control unit to actually euth "THOUSANDS of APBTs a year" as Aimee claims is exactly zero.
When will people learn that exaggeration does not help their case any? A non-valid example isn't a discussion, it's a rant by the ignorant and just gets ignored.
