Like I have said on here before, my A/Shepherd with the exception of Argus Vom Aducht and Cora Vom Haus Jackobs in his ped loves to WORK! He has more drive to hunt then most the labs and Chessy's! He retrieved a goose in freezing water with shots going off over his head, flushed Pheasant for my sons first bird and looks great just like Eds sons stud dog and people don't go past him without me giving the ok, what else would I get for the BIG $$$$ working dog?
With anything, there will always be exceptions to any rule. I know a VW Bug that can do the 1/4 mile in 9.78 seconds. Doesn't mean every VW Bug will, can or should. Just as every Mal or working line GSD could do PSD work..NOT!
I would say that you have been very lucky with the odds here. What are these exceptions in this AM sheps ped? Are they working line GSD's? If they are then plenty of people here may argue that you do not have an AM Shepherd, but a mut. The predictability (or lack of it in this case) that would result in using this animal for breeding would tend to solidify this "mut" theory.IMO
JHCIII, do you think that the two other dogs in the ped are where you dogs drive comes from? Prey and retrieve is good stuff but is there any sharpness, defense, fight, or aggression in there with it?
That is kind of working ability that I'm talking about. It is necessary for Schuthund, police work, herding, etc.
I have always thought the number one factor in a good working dog is his ability to defend his handler. Follow me to the Mal page and I will show you what I think "a good working dog should be" <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
My "mut" ped has HGH in it "Karl Fuller" used, he is a little sharp but goes to a nursing home with me just fine, defense showed up @ about 6 months, fight drive I can not test myself or teach, but if you need a "working" dog just for one purpose "protecting you" and thats all it does, then you are feeding a bottomless pit, use your dog! You are right on the breeding issues but how many of you are breeders?
"protecting you" has always been a prerequisite, in my mind, for a good working dog (certainly GSD). After that prerequisite has been met, then we can talk about herding or whatever additional working capacity you want.
Pop quiz boys and girls
If there are "X" amount of working line breeders, and "X" amount of dogs for sale.It would make sense that the breeder sells his best pups, or what he percieves to be the best pups, to the police or military, or vendors who deal with these agencies. In other words the sportsmen does not get pick of the litter. True or false
