What does the board think the minimum weight of the GSD should be? I know the working ability is the main point, but is there a line in the sand, or a boundary for breeding? Since the show people have their standards which most of us don't agree with, then do you think we should have ours? This is theoretical if the dog had the ideal working ability.
I'm not someone who thinks a dog's appearance matters but when does it for most of the breeders here & Schutzhund competitors?
Ok here is my opinion. 80-85lbs for males and 65-70lbs for females. A little larger than some PSD people would say, but smaller than the average jerk would say. That is a nice all-round working weight. If I were breeding that is what I would shoot for. (I would be ok with smaller if the dog was a real badass worker, but I don't think I would go larger.)
I prefer smaller dogs. IMO they work harder, last longer, jump higher, run faster, have fewer health issues, and...for sure...are easier to put over fences, etc. and they can bite just as hard.
Holy Smokes Richard!!!
Was that a dog? Or a small horse?
I think you will find people that like both sizes. Personally I don't want a dog that I can't carry a few miles out of the woods if need be. I suppose I could make a drag to get the 135 pounder out, but would rather not.... then there is the issue of being able to go more places. You can put a small dog in a lot more tight squeezes than you can a big one. They have the same number of teeth.
I'm with Schnauzergirl. The teeth still hurt pretty bad even if the dog is only 60lbs.
I had a friend who had dobes for 30 years. Her toughest dog was a 55lb. female who lived to be 15. I also had a lady in one of my classes with a 50-60lb female rotti. Very agile and almost as fast as a bullet.
I would think agility and dexterity might be sacrificed in a 100+ dog. Never mind the health problems and more rapid aging. IMHO the intimidation factor is there already if you have a snarling/barking GSD at the end of a leash that you are ready to release. A smaller dog will just get to the criminal faster.......before he even has time to pee his pants!!!
Caniche. I had to take a double take on your first 1 1/2 sentences. I agree a 55 to 60 lb dog is equivalent to a light heavy weight it has strength and speed.
