I think it's a pretty impressive pedigree. Many on this list won't like that there are show dogs in it (Quanto vom Lärchenhain (1981), Quai von der Boxhochburg (1977). In my opinion they are good enough working dogs and from older lines so I wouldn't worry about it. What are your females lines?
Bernhard Flinks dog Itor op de Hyde, which is on this web site, has 8 VA showdogs within the first 5 generation so I wouldn't worry about it too much. Of course most of them are from the late 60's early 70's.
Eric, Itors pedigree does have Quanto back in the 4th generation - I have seen some good working dogs with a show dogs this far back in the pedigree. I would not want a show dog any closer than this. My personal feeling is that this can help the looks and confirmation of what otherwise could be BUT UGLY working dogs.
I hope no one would inferr that just because there is a show dog in the 4th generation of a good working dog that show dogs somehow improved the working ability of this dog or that someone would inferr that these show dogs were nothing other than a pretty face in a pedigree.
just to add a little bit to Ed's response, from my own research...
Combinations of Quanto Weinerau with Mutz Pelztierfarm have shown to produce some good working dogs, as well as good conformation. Quanto doesn't carry the reputation that Canto Weinerau does, Quanto was actually quite a bit more stable than Canto, and in proper combinations put forth some good working dogs. Another example of Quanto lines that did good was Ico Ardhaus (2x National champ), he had 2 lines to Quanto(4th gen, both on his sire's side), 1 to Mutz(4th gen, dam's sire line), and one to Rocco Busecker Schloß (3rd gen, dam's maternal grandsire).
Yes I'm sure he's an impressive dog. I was just surprised at the pedigree. I'm not really sure how long ago working and show split. I was surprised that had 8 VA dogs within five generations most of them are from the 60's and early 70's. Had the show and working lines split by then? I wouldn't imply or think that having show dogs in the pedigree would improve working ability.
