I'm considering entering my GSD in a local SV conformation show in the Adult class (he's got his BH, but no Sch yet). I've never done this before--does anyone have any advice? (I figure it worth the experience even if I blow the handling and whatnot.)
How should I prepare my dog? What should I do or not do at the show itself? Is double-handling allowed? The SV rules seem to forbid hand-stacking, so how do you get your dog into the right position?
(Apologies if this is the wrong area for this posting; I couldn't find a more appropriate place.)

David,
For advice....start a running program now. Double handling is basically required, and you literally run your a*s off ( I'm not kidding here )
Set your self up a ring out of rope and learn your pacing to get your dog reaching during it's gait - it takes a bit of practice to make it look natural.
Man, me giving advice on SV conformation handling.....Hell must be freezing over as we speak.... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

Make sure the dog will allow his mouth to be examined...both open to check all the teeth are there, as well as totally closed to see teh bite. Also, if a male, the testicles are checked. Teach the dog to hold a stack. Try to get him to pull into the collar and trot.
And unless you are going to show up at San Jose in 2 weeks, be prepared to be amazed and dismayed at the results.

Lee, Will--
Thanks for the advice. Do you know of any on-line sources for information on double-handling? All I know is that someone is supposed to run outside the ring with a toy to keep the dog interested. Is there more to it? How big is the ring?--I haven't found a spec on that yet.
Is hand-stacking indeed disallowed? If so, how do you get the dog into the position?
And, Lee, you said "And unless you are going to show up at San Jose in 2 weeks, be prepared to be amazed and dismayed at the results." What do you mean? I think that's the show I'm going to (it's at Royal Oaks Park near Aromas), and given how little time I have to prepare, I don't expect much--I only hope to avoid total disgrace. Perhaps I should just go and observe this time? Will you be there?
Any further help you (or anyone else) can furnish would be greatly appreciated.

Dave,
If is Scheld, then you are OK. Check with Terry Macias for any pre-show training and a possible handler.
Lee,
You are lucky you did not come to the show the other week. The judge was advertised as working dog friendly and that was a major mis-representation.

Dave - find someone in your club or a club ASAP for some crash courses...and a handler if possible. The judge there is FAIR with working dogs. A KKL1 dog will get a KKL1 and a KKL2 a 2. He does not hand out KKL1 indiscriminately nor on basis of the name of the person holding the leash. With luck and a little prep, you may get a conformation rating you can go on to koering with happily. The teeth and testicle check is important.
Sue...thanks, I was kind of bummed to have missed it, but have since heard who had the leash handle can definitely influence that particular person...and the one I went to judged on color and size...big = winner. He liked large dogs, didn't care about coats or poor ears or lack of movement even if the dog was big and black and red/tan...Working dogs got a look only if the size/color/handler was in his personal parameters.

Unfortunately, no, I won't be at the show in CA...I am on the other side of the continent in Pennsylvania...although I wish I had cashed in alot of points and flown out to BC or San Jose for one of those koerings. But with 2 dogs to koer and hotels and rental cars...would have spent way more than I could have afforded. Hopefully the koermeister will come back this way next year...until then, I will have unkoered dogs...
