My wife and I purchased aour German working line pup 2 months ago and he is almost 4 months of age. He is a lot of work, but he is a delight.
At some point, a couple years down the road we would like to get a 2nd dog. As you can imagine, my wife and I have very different opinions and tastes in dogs. She is very concerned that the dogs match. Anyhow, she would like to get a White Shepherd to go with our dog who is mostly black.
Personally, I think white shepherds can be very beautiful looking dogs, but I have come across some comments here and there that these dogs have serious genetic/tempermant faults.
Can they really be that bad? Does anyone out there know of, or own a solid White Shep? I'm not talking about a champion Schutzund, or working dog, but one that would have a solid temperment to be a companion dog?
I have a white shepherd and I think he is the smartest and the best dog I've ever had. if you search the forum you will see many critcal opinions on whites. imho, thier critizisms are self fulfilling prophecy.
Max came from two tri color shepherds. white is considered recessive. there are some that specificaly breed whites. you can do a google search and find loads of breeders.
Since you wife probably won't want to hear the reasons why a white dog is genetically not what she wants, just go the easy route... explain how much white hair will be all over everything, and if you get another bi-color or even a black dog, at least it will all match.
Can they really be that bad?
Yes, they're not to established standard for the GSD's. No amount of discussion changes that fact. Culling them at birth was an old tactic for control of this flaw, and I would certainly euth' a white puppy born in a litter that I had any part of, as should any ethical breeder ( I've never had it happen, and I've been told it's been bred out of current lines )
Nowadays, unethical breeders breed specifically for this trait - and uninformed buyers purchase these dogs. It's a lose/ lose proposition, except for the greedy breeder. The owner loses, and the GSD loses, for sure. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif" alt="" />
I have a 5 year old White female. She is a very sweet dog, gets along with everything and everyone. But she came from a Back yard breeder and she is very skittish about a lot of things like loud noises. She also sheds for all of my other GSDs together!! I don't know if it is just her as she has a very thick coat, or all Whites are like that. Could not tell you since she is my first and probably last White. I have nothing against them, but I hate the WHITE HAIR EVERYWHERE!!!
