Here is the story. I have a litter og GSD. I am against the whole large doses of shots. Right before they were going to get shots they all stopped eating as much and then within a day one became ill. Moaning, not eating and the body temp dropped a bit. I took the whole litter to the vet amd they and was told that the sick one had hep. We gave them a DHLP shot and wormed them again and were sent on our way with a lecture. Now about 4 days later the sick pup died at the vets (I left him there) and was told it was not hep. but Lepto. Now 4 days after or so two pups have come down with similar sighns of illness, and I am stumped. One is shaking and moaning, but thier body temp. is normal. I do not know what is wrong. The others are fine. Jumping playing etc. THey are about 10 weeks now. Any info from you guys I would be grateful.
I am sorry for your loss. I am not sure what happened, or what they had contracted but I can say that when I worked for the vet we never vaccinated any dog that was ill. If it was running more than a smal temp, attributed to stress, then the dog did not get any vaccines and we waited until it was better. If their immune systems are already trying to fight a disease it compromises the dog to have the vaccine also.
GSDSAR is 100% correct. You should never vaccinate an animal that is ill. It is possible that the puppies are experiencing a side effect of the vaccine. Many animals will show some symptoms of the disease that they were vaccinnated against, and some will have such severe reactions that they will die from it. Vaccinating an animal always weakens it's immune system, and this vet probably did more harm than good by doing this.
If I were you, I would quickly find a different vet, preferably a holistic one, and see if you can't reverse the damage. One of my dogs suffered a reaction to his vaccinations, and we're lucky he's still alive. He will never be the same, but thanks to a few good holistic vets, we've been able to buy him some time and improve his quality of life.
I figured as much Michael, but the vets that I deal with wouldn't have vaccinated the other puppies just yet either. If one puppy was that sick, there is a very good chance that some of the others may have the illness/disease also, even if they aren't showing symptoms yet. I've been told many times over that it is better & usually easier to deal with an illness or disease than it is to reverse the negative effects of vaccination on an animal whose immune system has been compromised.
Thank you all for your advice and thoughts. What we have come to the conclusion is it is poisoning from a tree that the leaves got inot the water supply. The nursery said it was not harmful, but I took it to another got the name of it and sure enough. Very toxic. I will post the name in a bit. I feel very guilty and sad that it could have been prevented. THe other two pups died also. The vet that looked at the first one what an idiot. They all junp on the Vac. ban wagon.
Sorry to hear about your loss. It's so sad when you lose them so young. For the future reference of others, here are some links to pages about things around the home that can be toxic to dogs and the remedies.
Yews, a commonly used landscaping tree are especially nasty.
