Again no laughing but I was looking at the results page on the nationals website. I dont know what the HOT category is or means. Is yes good or not. Also the higher the number in each of the other category the better right?
If you know everything you cant possibly learn something new. |

HOT stands for Handler, Owner, Trainer. Basically the person owns the dog and has trained it from no title through SchH3.
yes, the higher the score the better.
for everyone else, here's the update page...

The dogs are mostly bought for "thousands" of dollars overseas. If you have the money it's easy to buy a finished dog and walk beside him. The dog might know more about the whole routine then the handler. To raise a puppy and bring it to this level you need time and patience. Maybe the most don't have it or like many people they go the easiest way. I wouldn't be proud of a title with a dog I didn't train!! This is my opinion.

I don't think that is always the case. In order to be eligible for the HOT category you have to have owned the dog by six months of age. I've never bought an older dog, I've always had them since puppies, but you also never know what you are going to end up with. The next dog I get for schutzhund I want to be older so I know what I will be getting with temperament, hips, etc. I get too attached to the dogs to rehome them and it is too much disappointment when they don't work out.

Here is a good example how easy it is to get a title if you have enough money. Look at the Nationals and you can see the dog what is currently in front. Bastian was Bundessieger 2001 and bought from Germany. Gary Hanrahan entered him here the Nationls and has success. The real hero I think is the trainer who took Bastian to the Bundessieger. Gary Hanrahan did not earn the title, he bought it.

Meanwhile, as good of a trainer Gary may be (God knows he knows more than I probably ever will), all he really did was buy the Bundesieger and get the dog familiar with him, then go get the title.

yes, true, but don't cut him short. The best dog with an average handler isn't going to make the cut. Just because a dog is trained doesn't make the handler good.

Sue don't get me wrong, I've got nothing but respect for Gary, but it is much more impressive if the dog is one that he trained himself. Ico v Ardhaus comes to mind when I think of Gary, he raised him from a pup and got Nationals twice with Ico. Why buy the BSP winner from last year and compete, unless you're in it for ego?!

Something to think about here....
First off, any competition is a TEAM effort. Secondly, would you be happier if the dog was brought over to sit in a kennel and be only used for breeding? To me, to buy a dog like that, and not show it, is worse than winning the Nationals with a bought dog.
It is easy to say he entered for Ego, but what if Ivan had won again? Do you think that would have fed Gary's ego? I doubt it.
