I have just written a new article on the 2002 USA Nationals. If you compete in the sport you may want to read it.
2002 Nationals article
This article will be published in the German magazine Das Schaferhund - I wonder what the Germans will think.

It was on there this morning.... I saw it... I should have right-clicked and saved it. I was always told not to make that face, it might stick that way

While I was not there, I have attended some past Nationals and even with 75 dogs, there were still too many weak animals. At over a 140, I could only begin to wonder what was what.
It is intresting that (please someone correct me if I am wrong) that the only top scoring dog that was in the top 10 was a Malinois, that was trained from a pup.
Maybe now USA will do something with the selection process that goes into the Nationals. While the Regionals would be great, I feel that it is too far for people to travel just to quailfy, and then have to get to the Nationals also. This also applies if we want younger people involved in the sport. I feel that there should be a quailfier in each state, that say a club hosts, but the judging is raised to a Championship level, and you have to get no less then 280, at either this event, OR your the Regionals. And before you go to this even the dog must get no less then a 286 at a club trial. This will weed out some of the weaker dogs.

That has more to do with the trainer than the breed of dog. Ivan could probably take a mutt (as long as it had decent drives) and make it a Nationals level dog. The dog being a Mal has nothing to do with it, so don't try going there.

on the subject of H.O.T., Michael, you might want to take note that the WPO Champion is a GSD and is H.O.T. I find it funny though, on the main results page they say no, but in the catalog page they say yes. And Brawnson is H.O.T. Must be one of those typos.

Brawson was titled by Mike Diehl BUT not from a six month old puppy. Maybe DPO is different but by USA standards to be considered a HOT dog the dog must be in the owners hands by six months of age...But Brawson is a HOT dog nonetheless....
As far as the requirements to enable a dog to be entered in a National event I think that having to have a 286 at a club trial and then a 280 at Regional event is pushing the envelope a bit. I think USA needs to start with either an increase in points at a club trial or you have to qualify at your Regionals. I do believe the qualifications need to be increased but having too many steps will cause a decrease in enteries to like 15 therefore decreasing the participants in the sport (IMO)

They will probably think the same thing I did - that your belittling of Mark P. is simply NC. And the comment that you won't be able to trial under Mark after publishing this article is ludicrous. Try tho I may, I never can find your name in the trial results section for titling a dog anywhere at any time.
