I just heard about a female that belongs to someone I know. She had puppies 2 nights ago and killed and ate most of them already. She was bred last season and did the same thing.
I personally think that this bitch should not be bred EVER again. I think she has a screw loose. After checking around, turns out this female's mother did the same thing. The breeder took the pups away and hand raised them.
I would be P**sed OFF if I bought a bitch for breeding and was not told that her mother was a puppy killer.
A girl I work with had a Bloodhound that did the same thing, she thought it was a fluke the first time but after the second litter was killed and eaten she put the dog down.
Just curious if anyone else has encountered this and what do you think??
Cindy, if she did this the first time she had pups, why did they take the chance and breed her again?
I remember seeing some questions on Ed's website about bitches that kill their puppies. I don't personally have any experience with this, but I have to agree with you both that the dog is crazy and should probably be put to sleep.
A bitch that kills her own pups should NEVER NEVER NEVER be bred again... you're right, only a mentally ill bitch does this and there is a chance that this illness could be an inherited trait.
That is so wrong. This breeder needs a wake up call.
This is a little off topic, but when I was a kid, our St. Bernard had a litter. I remember that one morning, my mom went out to check on her and found a couple of dead puppies. It seems the mother had accidentally laid on them in the night, smothering them with her body. It was very sad.
I have seen bitches kill a puppy that has a problem that will preclude it from surviving. I have seen a bitch push a puppy off and ignore it until it dies, same reason.
If it is killing the entire litter someone should take the hint. This is a self limiting defect that is preventing the line from continuing. Spay her and move on.

Who knows? This person is more concerned with making back his investment than producing sound working dogs. It really makes me mad!!
Dogs laying on puppies accidently, while very sad, does happen and I don't think this is the same thing.
I think if this female dog that ate her puppies was a human she would be in the same category as Andrea Yates.......
Anybody breeding a dog knowing they are going to have to hand raise the litter is a nutbar! Same goes for breeding dogs when you know they are going to have to be a C-section. If they can't reproduce themselves normally they shouldn't be bred. Purebed dogs are in trouble because of stupid profit driven motives like this.
Richard, very interesting. My father had a Czech bitch that was a very strange animal. She would only ever allow 8 pups to live from her litters. She was bred twice and both times she culled two of her own pups. Both litters were 10 dogs. We never knew exactly why, but we quessed that there was an instinctual think happening here. Even though she threw great pups we chose not to breed her again. Once, chalk it up to inexperience. Twice. . . ???
You think she could have been doing something very normal? Culling sick or abnormal dogs? Or perhapse limiting her litter to what she could handle? 8 boobs = 8 pups?
My uncle had a Rott that had pupies twice. The first time she neglected the two puppies that were born last. They were visibly weaker than the other pups. She just pushed them away. She obviously didn't want to take care of them. She was bred again and she did the same thing to one pup that was born last that was also weaker than the other ones. She was never bred again after that. Maybe she just knew the pups were weak and weren't going to make it.
