My niece and her husband just got a 7 month old bull mastiff puppy and they are asking me about SchH training the dog. I don't know what to tell them as I am ignorant of the breed. Do you guys think they can do SchH with this breed? Maybe just for fun or serious competition. I'm just looking for opinions and info on the breed. He appears to have good prey drive and will act protective at night when strangers walk by.
They can definitely try Sch training with a Bull Mastiff. A good one will have the temperment for the work - but I would warn them that they should spend most of the training trying to bring out as much prey drive as possible. I've found that the mastiff breeds tend to be more defensive than you'd really like for Sch.
It's when you can get them to follow an object with their whole head rather than just their eyes.

C'mon you guys!! I can't let you beat up on Bull Mastiffs without a reply I had a male Bull Mastiff a few years ago and if it wasn't for the everpresent strings of drool that accompanied him everywhere, I'd have another one in a minute. I admit I know nothing about Prey Drive except that it is what makes my GSD pup want to chase everything that moves. Certainly the Bull Mastiff wasn't as driven but he would go after a stick or ball all day and ask for more if that means anything. He was agile, active and alert and would IMHO have done very well in SchH. Not that I know anything except as an observer I can't imagine anything scarier than a BullMastiff leaping at you with fangs bared and streams of saliva dripping from them
http://www.hainland.com ... she has Rotts but I'm pretty sure she worked with a Bullmastiff before in the sport. I'm not positive but she had one pictured on her old website and I'm pretty sure she trained it for schutzhund. Can't hurt to ask.
I definitely wasn't picking on the Bull Mastiff. My last dog was an English Mastiff, and I did train him for Sch work. He had virtually no prey drive, and I pushed too much defense too quickly, so I ended up with a dog that would always bite - just not always the sleeve
I'm currently working a French Mastiff (very similar in body-type to the Bull) and he has a lot of prey drive (for a Mastiff)and I think he will do well (for a mastiff) in Sch competition.
I think the big advantage of training these breeds is they don't seem to be smart enough to come up with variations to exercises, so once you fix a problem you often don't create another one.
