So, I was just going thru my old picture box and found some photos of my long dead airedale terrier. I could have finished three GSD's to SchH III in the time it took this bonehead to get his SchH I ( of course our training methods were a bit less refined back then ).
Anybody else try an airedale in Schutzhund?
Hey Will,
I remember on several occasions seeing a SchH3 Airedale at the Nationals.....the only part of the dogs name I can remember is Nicholas? or something like that......after my coffee it may pop into my head.
He was an awesome protection dog and a lot of fun to watch......... this had to be back in the 90's............(before VC's time) lol
I own airedale terriers. Most are owned as pets. They are very good at sounding an alarm when someone comes to the door. Mostly what I need when home alone. Some are used in sar work and drug detection but most are bred for confirmation. My male has some working dog linege...his dad does drug detection. Did find an interesting airedale web sight...www.siriuskg.com Kn:Stonehenge.
Don't know about Airdales, but has anyone heard about an Australian Shepherd excelling in SchH? I guess he won the Diana Von Der Rappenau Protection Award. There are all the German-named GSDs and Dobes named on it and then there's "Bayshore's Eggs Benedict." I kidd you not!
"Benny" is the only known dog to hold both titles of AKC Ch. and SchH I. He achieved that SchH I in 1996. According to his owner, "he doesn't have a lot of defense, but he's great at it because he's very obedient and he loves prey." Among his career highlights was the Northern Indiana Schutzhund Club High Protection Award. He won that with a score of 96 pronounced.
Not trying to start an argument about which breeds can compete in SchH, but I thought that this was interesting. I have an Aussie. They are brilliant dogs and while mine certainly can't do SchH, she is killer in obedience and agility. Anyhow, I found this story quite fascinating. Hope everyone else does too!

Hmmm, Kali, I think you meant the only *Aussie* to hold an AKC championship and a SchH I title. I know of at least four Rotts with an AKC CH in front of their name and SchH III behind their name. There were many SchH III GSD's that got an AKC CH in the past, and some Dobbies also.
When I was a member in the past of the SchH Club of Orlando, Andy Garcia of the Ocala area showed his Aussies alot and did fairly well with them, winning HIT a few times. Also Laura Rounds of the Tampa area was showing a nice Aussie ( and was she ever nice to look at.....Laura, not the dog <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> ) that did great in his BH. Sadly, I went back on active duty before I saw her finish the dog.
