I'm a new owner of a 11 week old female GSD. She's marvelous. My question is, what's the point of a fur saver collar? I understand them replacing a regular choke collar, but if the prong collars are better than a choke, what do you use the fur saver for?
As an every day collar that causes less damage to the coat of long haired dogs, as a correction collar without the PUNCH of the prong, as a symbol of a working dog (not to many people want to admit that one, but it's true).
You don't need one, but I use them. I don't always like putting a prong on a puppy, but when I still want a correction collar it works well when used with care.
It is also a bad idea to keep a prong on a dog 24/7.
I don't use a prong on a youngster at all; when we're out just socializing/exploring, the pup is on the fursaver. I don't need the prong til I'm ready to use aversives (compulsion) in my training, and that's not for many months. It's my job to motivate the pup to enjoy working with me, so the prong has no function for a long time.
You're absolutely right, I haven't had enough coffee yet. I use the nylon flat collars that click together for the first few months til they're big enough for a fursaver.
Lee I am with you here ,i like to use fur savers once the pup is big enough to find one to fit .I like the fur saver as there is more to it than a reagular choke chain. A flat collar is good just to use to have on the pup to start out with. No prong untill the dog is old enough . Peter
Okay, so how old/big does the pup have to be to wear one that Ed sells? She is wearing one of the snap-together nylon collars now, but at the rate she's growing, it won't be long before she's out of it.
Janet : I have had young pups as young as 4 months wearing a fur saver ,but normally about 5 months depending on the growth rate, they are all so different .Peter
