Hello all. I have been reading many of the helpful posts here for a few years now. I have trained occasionally with a prong collar which I believe is a useful tool advocated by Mr. Frawley. Since I have a Dobie, the prongs really show on the dog. Unfortunately, I have been confronted 100s of times in the past 2 years by people opposed to the collar. The confrontations ranged from subtle comments all the way up to a nasty violent verbal attacks in front of groups of people. Try all they may, I still continue to use the prong as well as other collars.(Some even complain about the beautiful leather schutzhund collar that I purchased here.) I was just wondering if anyone here had any similar experiences with John Q. Public.
Yep - I get it too. For my prong collar originally and now for my ecollar. I've met a lot of ecollar users who experience the same.
One lady actually asked my a friend of mine if he puts the ecollar on his wife too! Makes me wonder if she's putting her dog's flat collar on her husband or what...?
No matter what you have on your dog, there will always be someone who will ask something stupid.
I had someone ask me if the fursaver on my dog was a homemade chain or what?
Then there was my ex's new GF that saw the fursaver on Nyna and thought it was "one of those awful spikey collars" Nevermind the fact that their lab wears a crappy choke chain all the time and she lets him hang himself on walks... That's real healthy, but it isn't one of " those collars"...
The typical bystander will find fault with any collar
Flat collar: She can't breathe!
choke chain: You could collape her trachea! (the trachea can be damaged by improper use, so this is the one with a little bit of truth in it)
Gentle leader: That's a vicious dog, just look at that muzzle!
Prong collar: You are going to put holes in the dog's neck, you could pinch a nerve with that thing, etc.
Harness: That dog is going to pull you over, you have no control, the dog will get loose, etc.
I haven't gotten too many comments on the martingale collar, but that's just because no one knows what it is.
Tell the people that the collar is easier on the dog than you are on nosy neighbors .

LOL, if they are genuinely curious I will try to explain why I use a collar, although I have thought about making Auster (the jelly bean dog) a spiked leather martingale collar just to get the know it all lab owner to walk in the other direction .
