How are you going to accuratly assess a dog's working ability and temperament before the age of 8 weeks in order to steralize them? Or, 8 months for that matter.
I don't know any working breeder that has restricted breeding contracts. I don't think they are a good idea, generally. In a good working litter, I would rather the worst dog in the litter be bred, than ALL the ASS shepherds out there being bred.
Working dog breeders
- would have done the breeding with the end goal of producing working animals
- generally are selling dogs to working homes
who have the same goals as themselves
- with working dogs usually only proven dogs get bred
- working dog breeders would probably screen their buyers(ie - not pet homes)
- quality is subjective who is going to say what should be bred?
just some thoughts, maybe I'm way off here.....
Spaying and neutering CAN be done at 8 weeks. We regularly do 2lb kittens and just recently did a whole litter of shepherd/husky cross pups. In some instances(such as this one) I am ok with it. As a procedure it is safe, however, I would NEVER do this to any working line pedigreed dog. Too much can go wrong.
I am with Van Camp on the ASS's though. Heck I could set up a discount day <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Can't you tell a great deal on a puppy at the 7 to 8 week period with the puppy selection test? Or is this not necessarily so, I know there's exceptions.
Do you work at an animal shelter occasionally Deanna? I bet that's depressing. Couldn't do it.
First off, I want to say people need to STOP deleting their posts.
Editing for spelling is one thing, but to go back and try and follow a thread with missing posts is impossible. Remember these posts are archived so that other people can read them and not have to ask the same question later.
That being said, yes, you can tell a lot from a well administered puppy test, but there is a lot that can change in the first 3 yrs or so of a dog's life. So much that I wouldn't advise it. Not to mention neutering early does GREATLY effect the maturity of a male dog.
I work at a low cost spay-neuter clinic, but also do some rescue when I have time. Another club member is a ACO and I do her adoptables on petfinder. It is depressing if you let it be. I will say it has not enhanced my love for the human race.
I'd just like to mention SECOND that sometimes there reasons for things or something could've happen you were not aware of. AND people make mistakes, does that mean I should get the electric chair for one confusing post??????????
Isn't there a nicer way to put things than that?
Was the mistake that serious?
Easy . . .
I will make an effort to do better, and I'm not asking to be so warm and fuzzy that you appear like Richard Simmons. I understand, let's just try not to get so angry.
For the record.... I was not angry, nor was that post only directed at you.
There has been a lot of MAJOR editing going on that I have seen, to the point that sometimes the posts no longer make sense. I will ask Ed to make a section "notes from your friendly moderators" It just happend to fall in line with your post Brad.
I also don't have an electric chair in my dungeon... they are too expensive <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> I do, however know how to euthanize... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
