My husband and I have found over the years that a puppy as young as 12 weeks can learn to do go outs and even enjoy it. Put a little bait on the refrig door or at the end of a hallway: Use a thumb-tac attached with some duct tape. Show them up close, use any word you plan to use in the Utility ring for "go outs". They very quickly catch on to the fact that if they move forward towards a wall/gate they will get something. Gradually move back away from the wall.
We were successful in teaching Luger (a leerburg dog) at the age of 11 weeks to do a 30 ft go out in about one month. Our present Utility shepherd was taught this at age 8 weeks. She does the best go outs in any Utility class in our area. Including all the Goldens and border collies. Try it. Make it fun. Don't use any negative words or body language. You'll be pleasantly surprised I think.
Lusy : having had a few UD dogs its good to hear some new methods in teaching the go out for AKC .
We do it a little different for sport dogs ,but i will have to remember to tell my wife tonight she loves utility class and has always used the Koehlers methods. Thanks Peter
