I have been watching this board for some time, and am curious. I don't see much mention about Czech/DDR line GSD's. I have mainly Czech lines. I have heard a lot of rumors about what they are or are not. just curious to hear the boards views...

I love em and think they have a lot to offer the working GSD enthusiast. I like their great pigment, big bone and good hips. I am really looking forward to picking up my new male puppy on Sunday from all DDR lines. I gave him Bernhard Flinks puppy test for 7 week old puppies and he scored almost all 2s and a few 3s. I was impressed with his independence and his strong pain and sound threshold. I became turned on to the DDR/Czech lines after seeing a few dogs at Bernhard Flinks seminar in Peoria of those bloodlines.

Ok, since we have 3 I'll answer this. Above all I like the work ethic. I find them responsive, willing, and having strong working drives.
Second to that I like the health, pigment, and looks.

I checked out a GSD kennel that has mostly Czech lines when I was looking for a kennel from which to buy a new SAR prospect. I loved the dogs!!! I just loved the way they moved, the work ethic, the colours and their structure.
However, I chose the Malinois to be my next partner for SAR but if I hadn't, I would have bought a dog from that kennel for sure!

Those are almost identical to what I love about these lines. The thing I find funny is how people love to say these lines lack prey drive. Every one of my dogs looks like a cat. It is amazing to watch the silly way they play.
I was at the Flinks seminar in Peoria. Is it possible mine were the Czech lines?!?! LOL.

Our friend has a Pohranicni straze pup (not sure of his pedigree) that has little prey drive, but we're working with what we've got. On the other hand, my pup (Stormfront's Brawnson x Elsa z Pohranicni straze) has high prey drive and is after everything, even if it just barely twitches, he's on it.
One of the things I REALLY like is the bone & structure. Having owned mostly WGR lines, Kane (our new pup) was our first Czech line dog. When he came out of the crate, I told my wife "Look at his legs, the bones are so thick" then that night, we commented that if you looked at him from above that he looked more like a Pitbull because he was so thick & stocky.
It is funny to watch them play around too, he has fun by "guarding the object" from our 7mo female, regardless of what the object is...LOL

Czech, Slovakian, Hungarian, and Bulgarian line GSDs are great. They have prey drive, there is a bunch of crap out there that they don't. What you will find is that the sport influence has not been so great in these regions of the world, especially with some lines- i.e. Pohranicni Straze. Thus, you will not see the hectic prey drive that you see in SOME other European dogs. High drive yes, hectic wacked out prey drive, not often. Big difference. They have all the necessary drives to work- prey, fight, defense, and civil. You can take that to the bank.
Some real flaws and concerns with the Czech lines, in particular, are extreme rank, extreme sharpness, and a tendancy to be very hard.

To each their own. What some call flaws I call a bonus. I have 3 extreme dogs. All three have rank issues. All three are extremely hard. They are not for everyone. However, I love that in a dog.
I like how the old world kept the shepherds. I think now, though the new fad is Czech lines. Everyone trying to make a buck. If you look at the magazines(I know a bad place), just 2 years ago at the number of Czech ads and look now. It has about quadrupled(sp?). Very nice dogs though.

Todd, yes I was very impressed with the dogs you had at the seminar. The only problem is I think they might be too much dog for a novice handler like myself. This puppy I am getting is my second GSD and my first GSD I am getting specifically for Schutzhund.

I think their absolutely great. I have a PS male I purchases a Yr. ago at eight weeks, that without a doubt is the best dog I've owed. Great pigment, great bone ,terrific nerves, wonderful temperament and an appetite of a Lab. He is a lot of dog though and does require experience and patience.
