O.K. all,
i visited a sch. club on thrs. that i plan on taking my new puppy to when i get him. i wanted the opinions of some people that were there on what they think aboout czech. line gsd's
OH MY GOODNESS
this woman got to talking and she just could not stop about how czech. dogs are very unstable, aggressive, and nervy dogs.
now when we all talk about this "having a hard dog" thing,,,,,what exactly is meant by it.. i know what i mean by it but i think i may be a little confused. or not so,,,
the woman was saying how these dogs are nervy
(hard) because if they had stable temperments then they would not be so hard(nervy), because they would be sound and know how to judge their environments.
thank god for me i know how to make decisions on my own and i know how to take what i need from some one's opinions but this woman was upset with me because i planned on getting a czech.gsd. she was trying her damndest(sp) to talk me out of it.
but now thinking about it..... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
what is the deal with hard dogs???some one please explain it to me "as if i were a five yr old"
(anyone see that movie?)
i can totally understand how she may see that hard dogs were just nervy.
like she said to me, now i'm asking the question, if they were of sound temperment, why would they be so hard? why would they not be able to correctly judge their surroundings and see a non-threatening environment where there was one? why would they have a snotty attitude where one was not warranted?
just curiou y'all <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
i'll be looking foward to your responses. so everyone please jump in

You will run into people that are short on knowledge and long on words a lot in life.
Hardness and Nerveyness are not the same or even close.
Hardness refers to the dogs ability to 'bounce back' after a correction or negative experience. Hard dogs require more discipline and structure than a soft dog, but with the hardness comes more room for handler error.
I think what she is talking about so far as nerveyness is the fact that the czech dogs do have more suspicion(or sharpness)in them. They also do not have a high defensive threshold (high meaning it takes a lot to elict defense). Some people see that as bad, but it isn't if you have access to a GOOD decoy that has a clue.

Not that I'm a great judge of temperment but as I understand it here is the meaning of a "hard" dog.
Hard dog: 1. One who is not easly upset/begrudging when given a harsh correction. Take a lickin and keep on ticken. Not a whiney baby dog who cryies to it's mama when corrected.

Check out these links.

Now not everyone agrees on what these terms mean, but for the most part they will clear the fog a bit for you.
So far as the talkative one, well, there is one or more in every group. You need to just attend some more and see if you want to work with these people.

so i am correct in my thinking of what a hard dog is,,, so why is it that some talk about these "hard" dogs as if they were beasts or something? i don't get it.
for example....Flinks dog .....why have i heard so many talk about his dog like it would chew your head off in a NY minute? if a hard dog will take a correction and just keep on with his business where does all this come from? is Flinks dog also handler aggressive or what?

Hey a topic right up my alley.
Definitions:
Moron: Anyone who takes an entire countries line of dogs and lumps them into one group.
Hard: Take a correction without falling out of drive. A beagle that runs out the front door and gets run over. Goes to the vet body cast. Six weeks later cast comes off, goes home runs out the front door gets run over again. Hard dog. The correction wasn't enough to convince the dog not to do it again.
Defense: Everyone is guilty until proven innocent. Once proven innocent. Proper introductions everything is fine. Ask Deanna about Dar. Then look at the pics Deanna took on my site.
There are an awful lot of misconceptions about Czech dogs. One of which is they have no prey drive. Czech out the threads in this section and you will find some more info about the misconceptions.
Pack leader: Any human has the knowledge and ability to handle a dominant dog. W/O succumbing to societies views on dogs.
Can a Czech dog be a great family pet? HELL YES! Can a Czech dog be a family pet and a SchH dog? HELL YES! Do people at SchH clubs try to discourage lines they know absoulutely nothing about? Do I even have to answer this one?

He has taken a harsh correction, straightened his act out, and did not come out of drive. He is also VERY dominant, but only with the other dogs, not with me (he just blows off my wife and acts like he didn't hear her sometimes). Every time I take him to a strange place, everyone around flocks (LITERALLY), putting lots of pressure on him (lots of strangers coming directly in and crowding), yet all they can do is comment on how calm he is. Yeah, sounds like a nervy spook to me <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />

i'm loving the responses i'm getting from this one... <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
Todd E. Gaster
the correction wasn't enough to convince the dog not to do it again.
what if you're trying to correct some aggression out of this dog? same go for that?
Todd
everyone is guilty until proven innocent.....
come on Deanna i'm waiting for you on that one..
Todd
pack leader: any human has the knowledge and ability to handle a dominant dog.......
with a dominant, hard dog.....what happens when this dog tries to test you? you do those subtle pack leader type things and also the dog needs some corrections but that's not enough for him?
break it down for me please <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" /> <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
the white gsd that i had was very dog aggressive but with people she was very submissive,,,,when people talk about dominant dogs i never think of a dog aggressive dog. just dogs that are trying to be dominant with humans.
i appreciate all responses....thankyou and i hope you keep them coming...
