If I could get a clone of my old dog Natan Busecker Schloss, or Grief Lahnatal, or Burnd Lierberg I would do it in a minute. Anyone who would not would be a dummy or a religous fanatic.
I am in total agreement with Ed. The day may come. I hope you have some hair saved. As long as your making one for yourself do you mind making one for me too.
while I might consider it, I wouldn't say I would definitely do it. You can clone a dog, but that doesn't mean it will be the same dog...the genes will be the same, but the things that made the dog itself, won't be there. My choices might be a little different than others as well. I'll take Wanko vd Maaraue, Addi Tonteichen, Pushkaß vH Himpel, Burga vH Himpel, Arthus Lunsholz, and Dorle Lunsholz...that's a start.
Better yet - I have semen saved of Natan. There will come a time before I die when I can do this. Several months ago I heard where people thought it would not be long where it could be done for $10,000.00 - cheap money if it would work.
I am not sure how it would work from semen since only 1/2 of the chromosomes are in each. There may be cells in the seminal fluid that are not diploid and carry the whole genetic code. It probably won't be long before it can be done for that amount.
Ed
I have heard that you have semen from some of your better studs, Natan and Otis for example. What is the determining factor for you when you use this for AI, and have you yet? I think it's a fantastic idea.
the idea seems very attractive but doesn't that take some of the challenge , and therefore , some of the skill , out of training a new dog . i mean if you knew exactly what you were dealing with in terms of genetic properties ( potential ) aren't you then limiting yourself to the potential of the previous dog . i like the idea that you breeders take a subjective look at the breeding stock that you have , decide what you want to breed for , and then try and bring the two most likely parents together . from that union it is then up to the trainer to bring out the qualities desired . if all you had to do was go through the steps of cloning , repeat the training regimen ( with adjustments as deemed suitable ) aren't you going to basically settle for what went before ? agreed , obviously you out there have seen some amazing dogs , but didn't you enjoy the challenge of trying to figure out each dog on their terms ( with some clues , of course ) , and then trying to maximize that dogs' ( and the dog/handler teams') potential ?
