ok, I already liked the board change (with the extra forums for Working, Show, & Crap (aka American) GSDs, along with all the other breeds, but now Ed is making me a happy man. Having 2 specialized forums on my favorite varieties of GSDs, Czech & DDR, this is cool. But, the only problem is figuring out where to start on this one....LOL
I'll start this thread by asking what people like most about the DDR dogs and what they like the least about them. So anyone want to bite? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> I have a half DDR male. I love the dog except he's a bit handler sensitive. I like a dog that can take more of a correction but on the other hand since I don't need an artillery to train him come trial time I don't have to worry about what he'll be like when the "collars" come off.
DDR lines, "like" category: Pigment and bone. Pigment and bone. Pigment and bone. They are usually gorgeous animals and they exemplify for me what the GSD should look like structurally. It's also rare to see washed-out color in the DDR lines.
"Dislike" category: Too sharp and distrustful. Now I know I've pissed some people off, but oh well. And yes, I know that there are plenty of exceptions too. But I personally like a dog that is a little surer in the temperament department than many of the DDR dogs tend to be.
From what I have seen of DDR GSDS, I like their great pigment, good bone, big heads and low incidence of hip dysplaysia. I prefer a dog a little on the sharp side. I have never owned a DDR dog but I guess I will find out in a few short weeks what it is like. I am picking up a male pup of all DDR lines. His mother is linebred 3-3 on Lord and the father is from Grafental kennels.
Dave--if the Graefental lines go back to Bodo, this is an interesting mix. Bodo had a very, very sure temperament and great structure (he was a DDR Sieger and later a stud dog for Fidelco Guide Dogs). Lord was well-known for throwing high civility into his progeny. I've seen plenty of dogs from both of these bloodlines, but none that I know of that have combined them.
Pete-- The mother of the pup has Bodo about 5 generations back. I was unable to find Bodo on the paternal side. I sent you a private mail with the website of the breeding so you could check it out. Dave
What I likedthat the DDR dogs offered was through dogs from Haus Himple, Ritterberg, was a long not used genetic path back to Bernd Leirberg. This is where everyone that I ever saw and worked that I liked went back through.
I see a lot of talk about the DDR dogs and most have faded away. Most simply offered great pigment and big heads. A few were outstanding workers and these owed their greatness to Bernd.
I guess I should have mentioned that I worked one on the road as a police dog and titled another in SchH (1989).
I also was quite involved in putting a good number of them on the road as police dogs back in the late 80's when there was still a few good ones floating around.
