I wouldn't discount getting a puppy from a good breeder in another area of the country. Finding a local breeder is great, but if you can't it is much more important to get the puppy you want/need than to get the pup locally. It is more expensive but you can go and get the puppy and still see the breeders facilities and the parents. If it is a puppy you can put it in an under seat carrier to bring it home on an airplane. Spending a little more in the begining saves a lot later.
