This is the first time I have posted a message. I'm from Caryle, Illinois, and am considering purchasing a puppy from vomAusland Kennels in the Bowling Green, Kentucky area. The sire is Bastin vom Kokeltal and dam is Yudy vom delphi haus. We have been talking to Tom Trainor. Can anyone tell me anything about the shepherds, kennels and Mr. Trainor. After a very bad experience earlier this year with a breeder/purchase, we're trying to be extra cautious and would appreciate feedback anyone can give. Thanks.
That's always a tough question to answer. No matter how ethical and moral you run a dog business someone will always have something lousy to say. Concerning puppy buying there many other inherant risks involved in GSD breed, then also worrying about breeders reputations. There are some very prickely people providing great puppies out there. Sometimes it simply makes sense to look at the dogs involved and go with that inspite of the all emails you may get soon. From all that I have heard Bastin seems to be a fine dog. Now, test the females metal. She is 50% of your equation. FYI, I have never heard of Mr. Tom Trainor. Good luck. I do know of a wonderful litter on the way in California. Great breeder too: EMAIL privately if you like.

I know Tom - Cindy was at the Regionals last weekend and he showed a dog. She said is was an excellent working dog - Tom is rough behind the ears (some say I have no ears at all) but I think you will get a nice dog from him - go to my list of training articles. There are 2 or 3 articles on how to selection test a litter of puppies. Print them - study them and do them if you question the breeder.
This is the first time I have disagreed with Ed in a public forum. He said to print and work with the selection process he has outlined in another area *if you question the breeder*.
If you question the breeder, find a different one. I have no intimate knowledge of the gentleman about whom you are inquiring; I have been burned many times, the list of actors is long and NOT DISTINGUISHED AT ALL!! Find a breeder and broker you trust and THEN look at what he or she has to offer.

Well, I feel like I have to speak up for Ed on this issue. I didn’t find anything he said objectionable. As a matter of fact I was impressed and thought it was big of him to recommend another breeder on his forum.
“If you question the breeder, find a different one.”
Someone who hasn’t been cooking in this dog business for years and was screwed before (as the original poster indicated) will question EVERY breeder, and rightfully so. How can you trust someone 100% if you haven’t dealt with them before? Relying on the experiences of others can definitely help to a degree. As far as familiarizing oneself with the puppy selection process, it’s a good idea in any case.

You know, there's an old saying somewhere about "even fools strike gold too" (if not, there should be <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" /> ). A breeder (speaking generally, not about Tom, I like some of his dogs quite a bit) might not be the best in the world, but breed a really nice litter. In which you might find a really good dog (I've done it, the big black sable SOB that's next to me is my proof). Besides, going over puppy testing is a good idea, that way when you get your pup, you can recognize some of the traits and know what you've got to work with without taking the breeder's word for it.
And come to think of it, Renee is right! I don't remember Ed ever coming outright on the board and saying that someone would get a nice dog from another breeder, basically putting his stamp of approval on that breeder (that someone was asking questions about). That should tell you something.
