Hello folks,
I'm writing this hoping that someone out there might be able to point me in the right direction of finding a young working line GSD.
In May I bought a showline pup and was very disappointed with his drive and overall temperment. Though I had read a lot on SchH and the sport I thought that if the parents were titled the dog would be a high achiever in the sport. I was obviously mistaken and ended up placing the dog in a pet home.
I'm back in the position of wanting a dog again but I have a unique situation in that I'm going to be relocating to Ireland in early 2005. In order to be able to bring the dog with me it needs to be 6mos post rabies shot.
Essentially I'm looking for a male that has a lot of drive but does have an 'off' switch when its time to go in the house. A personality that tends to high ob. would be ideal.
My speculation is that there are some smaller breeders out there that may have a dog or two left over from a litter simply becuase they have held dogs for stud evaluation or perhaps were unable to find them all homes at 8 weeks?
Any advice would be helpful here!
Thanks in advance!

My thought on this based on my own experience of currently owning one dog from showlines and one from working lines as well as what I heard Bernhard Flinks mention at his seminar, is that if you are not getting pick of the litter you are wasting your time. Your basically looking for a dog to compete with, which is why I wouldn't take a "leftover" dog. Granted some breeders may keep the pick puppy then sell it later, but I would really do my homework on this as you have already been down this road and only to be disappointed. Puppies are a crapshoot, doesn't matter if the parents were titled, there is no guarantee that they will work out. With that said, I think your chances are better for what you have in mind by getting one out of working lines. Finally, high drive dog's don't come with an "off" switch. It is a matter of consistant training, genetics, temperment, and maturity.

Why not wait until after the move and get a working pup from Europe?

I wouldn't buy a puppy from Europe, not a good idea. I'd buy adults, and have, but I'll never buy a puppy from overseas unless I have a personal relationship with the breeder.
9 out of 10 overseas pup buyers take it in the butt. You may as well grab your ankles and beg for it.

Ditto that-
But, that is also ONE breeder, who I trust and have had excellent dealings with. Actually, in the club in NH most all the dogs were bought through Rinus and they are ALL NICE dogs- as represented.
Sad to say I have seen a bunch of crappy imports from elsewhere. As with anything- do your research. Many Europeans see us as stupid Americans with money and nothing more- with an import, if things don't go well, you have very little recourse. Be prepared to junk the dog. If you can't throw that money away- don't buy the dog.

I kind of forgot that most people don't plan getting a dog 6 years in advance. (yes, I am obsessive) Just calling up anybody (American or European) and telling them to send you a pup is asking for trouble. Sorry 'bout that.

Regarding getting a dog from Europe...
There are very few people I would trust to send me what I was looking for, and Rinus tops that very short list. He's a very honest man that has a great passion for the breed and it shows in everything that he does. Having sat down with him on a few occassions just to talk dogs and shoot the breeze, I've found everything that I've ever heard about him (all which were good by the way) to be true.

in addition to what has already been said, you will note that rinus was one of the coaches for the belgian wusv team this year and has been before. infact he won the world championship himself in 1991 with link. so, besides offering good dogs, he also has training and advice to offer. i have bought only one pup from him thus far, but none-the-less would highly recommend him to others. let him do the choosing and you will not be disappointed.
