My 90lb GSD Rebel turns on beautifully for protection work but my decoy says that we need to harden his bite. He has the drive of a Mack truck and is a very stable 2 year old male. Any tips on how to get him to bite harder. We've been playing tug-of-war with the burlap but I was curious if there were any other helpful hints.

You can build the grip by putting the dog on a flat collar or harness. When the dog makes the bite the agitator pulls one way and the handler pulls the other. If the dog loosens on the bite he will come off. If he has a desire to make the bite he will learn that he has to hang on if he wants the sleeve.
If you can't be a Good Example, then You'll just have to Serve as a Horrible Warning. Catherine Aird.
Thank you Richard. That won't make the dog think I want him to out will it? <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif" alt="" />

We put our dogs on a long line attached to a bungee cord. The dog of course doesn't get the decoy on the first bite. The decoy backs up as the dog attacks. On the second and third attack the dog gets the bite at the end of his bungee. When the dog has the suit/sleeve, the decoy advances to take pressure off the dogs neck, then backs up to put pressure back on. Working a dog on a heavy suit forces the dog to develop a solid bite. After that, sleeves are easy to crush.
Thankx for the advice. I will bring it up at our next training session. I had seen the bungee leash in action on a video clip and thought it would be beneficial but I haven't talked in person to anyone who had ever used it.
