Yayyyy
I have the first topic
I have a 6 month old GSD and was wondering if it was too early to start running/jogging with him?
We don't let him jump much because I heard it was bad for the hips this early in life, but I didn't know if he should be running.
Also, how about steps? There is a great place for stairs at a tobaggon(sp?) hill that has 115 steep steps. Would this be too hard on the hips?
Thanks

It's better to know everything about nothing than nothing about everthing.
Mt Pup is 6 months as well, I have been following the rules about jumping and such, he jumps anyway but not too much, I won't do any kind of hard running until 12 months or so, I want him to be fully developed bone wise before we start long distance stuff. I would so the same if I were you.. do you really want to jog anyway?
The stairs... my breeder actually has a subsection in her contract that states "No stairs until 6 months old" so I will assume from that, stairs are not a good idea before that time, I will take it the extra mile and wait on that issue to. At least for large stairs.

i have doberman male 2yrs.. What i am currently doing with him is teaching him to pull.. Pull me on a scooter...why cause it is fun. In addition he is ball made so i am getting him to run up the hill at the park.... This puts his centre of gravity to the back legs and builds them. He has put on 3 kilos of in the last month. I would like to know if anyone has been consistantly been doing any programs with their dogs to physically muscle the dogs up.. not just condition but to muscle them up...
At this age.. swimming would be a great way to exercise... or just taking an off leash walk in the fields or woods..so the pup can run at his own pace.. and not on pavement or concrete.
I don't deal with puppies, since all the dogs I work with are grown. Conditioning is a very important factor however in police work. Detector dogs, PSD's it doesn't matter. They need stamina to do the job properly. While confidence courses are good exercise their primary existence is to ensure the dogs can overcome these "obstructions" when confronted in actual situations. there is no substitute of good aeorbic exercise. My labs, those that like to swim get plenty of it, otherwise they do a lot of running. It doesn't hurt the dog or the Trooper assigned as the handler. The only good thing about the conditioning program is: The trainers usually just stands around and watches (lol).
