I am to start doing "road work" for the AS with my GSD once he reaches 18th months. He is currently 15 Months old. I am looking for any suggestions from others whom have trained for the AD. My GSD is currently in very good physical condition from all the retrieving and long walks we are currently doing.
Swimming, playing fetch uphill continuously, jogging, biking, and the right diet. Young dogs in good health can run it easy.
Watch the pads of the feet and make sure you are gradually getting them used to concrete and pavement. Sore feet suck. Clip those little claws too. I think the feet suffer more than the rest of the body in healthy young working dogs. Don't forget a vet check, just in case.
anything before a year. I will wait upto 18 months before doing any kind of conventional road work. Miles and miles of cattle ranch roads are what we have to work with out here. Plenty of hills and no vehicular traffic. Remember to ease into it, like VanCamp said, watch the pads; once cut they will haunt you for some time. Summer is around the corner, guys like Rich contend with temps in the 110's, he is a good source for heat related info

Anyone know of a AD test comming up in either Iowa or Minnesota? I know about the July trial in the Quad Cities in July. I may attend that one, but am trying either to find one closer to me or in MN so I can stay with relatives. Thanks!

If any body is thinking of using of those Springers do yourself and your dog a favour and
get a decent harness as the thing that they provide as a suppossed harnes is a cheesy piece of junk. I just bought a Springer recently to try it out but I still think I prefer bikejoring.
Thanks Phillepe, that is really going to help me out!
