To build up muscle and tone I was told to have him drag a tire around. He was sick for a while with worms and once he is fully healthy again, I'd like to bring back some of his tone/muscle.
What is the proper harness for pulling/dragging around a tire? (or any other object we can find to be fun, wagon, cart, etc)
I dont want to injure him. I've seen people just attatch a chain to the dogs collar. That seems it would be very hard on the neck.
Let's start off with supplements. I don't supplement so I have no info to offer you on that one. I feed a quality kibble and she gets unlimited treats. That's it.
Start with a smaller tire. The dog is going to need to get used to both the sensation of pulling something and the sound the tire makes as it is dragged over the ground. Starting on grass is the easiest.
If your dog is stiff and sore the next day...you over did it with the training.
Attach a chain to the tire and then attach your towline to that. The towline should have some elasticity to it to prevent hard pulls on the dog. The one that I have has some bungee cord through a polybraid rope. The chain will prevent your towline from breaking due to it being dragged under the tire on the ground.
I hurt my back a couple of months ago and have not scootered since then. Took her out for the first time on the bike with the Springer attachment. Boy did she want to go!! She tired herself out pretty quickly though as she is no longer used to it.
Is there risk in pulling weight for a dog. I am interested in learning more. How do you develope a weight pulling plan. How long do they need to pull something, how many times (like a rep or a set) Has anyone does this with there shepherd. If anyone has done this with there shepherds, what was your experience. How much wait did you use, how much did you increase the weight when the dog got stronger?
Can i ask why you want your dog to pull weights - apart from building muscle? Is it necessary for the kind of work you will have him do? or is simply so that your dog will look more muscular?
