I have a new german shephard puppy, and I am trying to get him to come. I know that he understands me, but he chooses not to come. Sometimes he does just depends on if he feels like it.
He will not even come for a little piece of hot dog. While teaching him to sit he preffers praise over treats. But praise will not get him to come to me. Even when I am going outside.
I may seem to be asking many simple ( to you) questions. I am not able to get eds tapes due to the fact that we have completely switched over to dvd in my home.
I hear your plight on the dvd issue. Do what I did, buy a cheap vcr. The tapes are worth it and from what Ed said it will be a while before he has them out on DVD.
You need to have the pup on some kind of a leash for training the come. I prefer a flexi. Call your dog and reel him/her in. When he/she gets to you praise her lavishly and give her a hot dog or whatever. You have to be more interesting than what is going on around the dog. Sometimes this takes a lot of acting, but it is part of having a dog. Most importantly watch your tone. When your mother called you in "that tone" chances are you didn't want to come either.
I know that he understands me, but he chooses not to come.
I hear this quote all the time and am just curious. How do you know he understands you? You just got him. So what is he doing that says..."Yup, they want me...not gonna do it."?

What if you tried to build up slow? You might not want to start out trying to get it to do too much. Try a short distance first and make it simple even if it's just a few feet. Then slowly increase the distance. If the dog doesn't like hotdogs then find something you know it likes. Do a little experimentation. Also, your going to have to get a VCR or something if possible. Those tapes are a must in my opinion.
I too use a leash when training my pups. they are 9 mnths. and 6 mnths. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
I don't hold on to the leash the entire time, but instead use it as a back up incase one gets interested in something else. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif" alt="" />
I DO use some treats every now and again too. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif" alt="" />
Especially when it's time to go inside. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
