How soon can you work with a puppy to train for tracking? Mine is 10 weeks. I been laying a short track about 3-4 feet using bits of hotdogs then at the end have his favorite toy as a reward.
Thanks Ray
Hi Raymond
you dont do any harm with going on like this.
I think that s a nice easy and fun way for a little dog to do already something.
Also you could try to make a bigger scentpad like one meter to one meter and put a lot food on this ,some obivous to see some hidden .Also put a flag already there,
at the opposite side of the flag i would do some steps in a straight direction like a line , with food too in every step.
Everything has to be without big time stress pulling on the leash, neither the pup or you.At the end i would put some more food, maybe one of the little square boxes of cat/dogfood. After the pup ate that up and you show your proud about him found that i would bring in the toy for ending up that sniffing on the ground is giving a reward.

I have done the same with very young dogs, also. I think it's O.K. if you remember a few very important points:
1)At this age you are not training, you are imprinting.
2) Less is more. Keep it short and simple with a lot of food. Most obviously, there should be no compulsion; certain you already know that.
3) Lots of variety; terrain, length, age, etc.
I speak from experience when I tell you that too much too soon will leave you , most times, with a very bored dog with little or no intrest at an age where he / she should be coming into his/ her prime.
The tree of Freedom needs to be nurtured with the blood of Patriots and tyrants. Thomas Paine
I would also be very cautious about putting a toy at the end of the track. Food should be enough if he is hungry and has adequate food drive. If you put the ball at the end and the puppy starts to look forward to the ball more than the food, it can lead to a plethoia of bad habits (racing to the end, not absorbing each footstep, ignoring the food, etc.)
I won't put a toy at end of track. Just place more hotdogs at the end. I have a round piece of leather I put the hotdogs on.
Thanks so much for all your help. Right now every thing I do is imprinting the puppy. I work with him several times a day. Just for a few minutes. Now when he sees me get my container of hotdog pieces he sits right down and wants some.
