I have resently asked a very well known breder if I could get some frosen semen from his stud dog, as I live in Australia. As a curtisy I atached my bitches pedigree to the e-mail.
His firs reply was the beceuse my bitch hed Fero vom Zeuterner Himmelreich in her fourth generetion, he will not allow me to breed to his dog. As he has never seen a good bitch with fero in her fourth generetion. Furthermore he said that if the pups turn out bed the people will not say that this is because of my bitch but rather the blame will fall on HIM.
To me this sounds crasy as he has never seen my bitch and Fero would only have 1/32 or 3.125% infuance on the pups. What about the other 97% of the dogs in her pedigree in the likes of Umsa Bungalow, Cora von der fasanerie, Troll vom Korbelbach, Arek vom Stoffelblick, Norbo vom Hause Marterstock, and what about his own super stud dog he would contribute 50% to the pups geen pool and Fero only 3%.
Further more I am of the belive that GOOD BREEDING IS ONLY SELECTION AND GOOD SELECTION DEPENDS ON THE QUALITY OF THE ACTUAL INDIVIDUAL AND NOT THE PEDIGREE. The pedigree only tels you what the individual SHOULD be like.
I would like to hear from the panell what you all think of this breeder saying this.
I love strong nerve dominant character dogs. The rest are not my cup of tee.
I say keep looking. If your bitch has Fero in the 4th, the pups would be in the 5th. While I don't have any Fero in my own dogs, we have quite a few bitches that have Fero blood in my club and none are bad animals. All dogs have some quirks, none are perfect. That said, there are some fero free dogs in the club that plain out SUCK.
I don't think any dog should be disqualified on pedigree alone. They should be looking at more than just the paper. IMNSHO

I do not wish to disclose the breeder at this stage but he is very well known and that is why his coments about my bitch, without seeing her, based on the pedigree only, made me think of wether he rearly knows what he is talking about.

Yes I have bread dogs for a while know I am 34yo but I have groun up in the eastern block in Europe and all my life I have been surounded by Border patrol and railway police dogs( my grand mother used to breed them) so I have been brought up in a breeding seriouse working dogs enviroment. I heve seen how some of the best dogs don't jell geneticaly and vice versa how some not so exelent dogs produse absolute purls so selecting a animal to breed from or to can't be done on paper. Rather a seriouse breeder should see and acure a tase or a sertain feel for the animal and then make a calculated decision. That is my feeling.

I should have mentioned that if after seeing the animal the breeder looks at the pedigree and the pedigree suports his or her belive that this is a good dog only then you can make a better decision and not just from a pice of paper, and defenetly not dismising a dog because of one mail in the forth generation. Which would be not even visible on the pups pedigree, and which has only 3.125% infuance on the pups anyway.
I love strong nerve dominant character dogs. The rest are not my cup of tee.
Well to answere your Question yes I did, and I woudn't do it again. one must understand that in Australia we have a very small gene pool when it comes to working dogs. Further more This was my firt litter in Australia of GSD as i gave up on the breed 15 years ago due to the lack of anything decent outher then show dogs.
Then a man called DENNIS GALLIGER sold me a working femail pup. I was still not totaly happy as she lacked hardnes in her charecter. So when my bitch was 16 mounths I started looking around for a dog that would improve this. A dog that would put hardness and fighting drive in to the equation of breeding.
I rang up DENNIS GALLIGER and asked him if he knew of a dog that he could sugest, He then talked me into breeding to my bitches father and said that that would be the right thing to do as I will end up with very strong charachter pups and so on.
Well now we know it was a mistake and we lurn from our mistakes. But I cant see the conection of your reply to my topick.

Just a guess, but I bet Chris understands what the state of affairs is for the working GSD in Australia. <img src="/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif" alt="" />
