Considering the fact that I personally have 2 gsds, I am very happy to see a section just for GSD RESCUE.
But, why are GSDs the only one in the section (rescue)? Are they the one breed that is given up so often?
Very sad.

				Wendy,
We have dealt with some other breeds. The primary goal of the board is not rescue. We have looked for some other homes and there is a section on dealing with Rescues of any breed that has been adopted and may have problems. But.... Ed has GSD's and many on the board have GSD's so they seem to be the "Top Dogs". The primary focus is working dogs, and lets face it, Mals and GSDs are still the top working breed out there. Though I hope my beloved Giants and BRT's will start to do some chatching up!!!!

Welcome to the board.

				Richard is so nice.
Welcome to the board, but take a look at the picture in the upper left hand of the screen. The dog eating the helper?

YEA BABY, LOOK AT THAT MAGNIFICENT ANIMAL! GSD. . .

Just kidding. . .

I for one, would like to see WORKING DOGS (of any breed) here, there are many other organizations for fluffy the Puddle and FiFi the small breed mix. I would like to see working dogs go to homes with people that can handle them and appreciate them. (Service dogs especially)

				Wendy
It is sad that more departments don't try to rescue. I am a police canine trainer. I don't sell dogs or traning. I don't get all wrapped up in where dogs come from, I select them for what they can do for me. The only people I have to satisfy are the Troopers that work the dogs, the departmen and ME.I've said this before and caught some flack, people questioning the ability of the dogs etc. I let the records speak for themselves. We make well over 1.000 drug arrests a year, using the dogs. To date (knock on wood) we have not yet had a case supressed because of the dog. I'll continue using rescues as long as the dogs with the behavior I'm looking for are available.

I think the work you are doing on rescues is excellant.

				FWIW.
Casper, the long-haired black Shepherd featured in Ed's "Basic Obedience" tape was from a German Pound. He was later titled as an Sch I, CDX and TD. Casper
Ed's drug dog was a black lab called Gabby. Again, from a pound. Gabby
Lotsa nice dogs out there that need good homes.

Wow - I never even knew there was a rescue section on this board. Thanks guys!
I hang around here mostly to learn. I guess you learn something new everyday.

I volunteer for a rescue group thats focus is mostly GSDs. The president of our group has had a long standing relationship with the local Police K-9 trainer. And he too has found some very good GSDs through rescues. Everybody thinks I'm crazy when I tell them this, but he does not breed a single dog. We just last month had 2 of our GSDs graduate from his training program and they are now K-9 Officers. (Ok sorry for bragging at the end there. )

I think rescued dogs are so special.....
Until I bought the 2GSD's I now have, all of my previous dogs were rescued.

I have one 13 yr old male lab/collie mix still, but he is getting very weak in the hind quarters and i am sad to say he probably is not going to see the next winter

Most of the dogs and cats I rescued I gave to good homes, which sometimes took a long time to find.I rescued a HUGE malamute/GSD cross ( approx 1 yr old)once by tempting him w a dog biscuit and then lassoing him with a dog lead!! He turned out to be so great it broke my heart to place him..( it had taken 3 mos to find a permanent home)( and I already had 2 other male 90lb. dogs in the apt.)

So if I rescue any GSD's, is this site used to help find an adoptee? ( I doubt I will find any more dogs in my new area though. In The Bronx, strays were very common)

				Jeanette,
This board isn't really for finding homes for rescues. If you have a dog that needs to be placed you need to check with Ed PRIOR to posting the info. The fear is that the board will be over run with available rescues. Yes we know there is a big need to attempt to find homes for rescues, and there are other rescources for that. The dogs that have been attempted to be placed here come from strong working backgrounds which makes it harder to place them.

If you have a question you can Private Message one of the Moderators or Ed to discuss a situation (We would just refer it to Ed any way, but if you would like a sounding board...).
